That's the story. There's always somebody that can find axles cheaper or free. When I was looking for axles I never came across any of those deals LOL.

Axle prices vary so much depending locations. If you are lucky enough to find such dirt cheap axles in town, go for it without thinking twice.

I don't think the aggravation of trying to find cheap axles out of state and have them shipped is worth it...unless you have a lot of time in your hands to coordinate everything properly or even better drive hundreds of miles to pick them up yourself.

But the cheaper the better for sure. Building 1ton axles properly ain't cheap.

oh yes i know and the strength differences don't matter since you it's going under a 1/4 ton truck. You'll probably be hacking all that radius arm bullshit off in order to link it and the 98 can use the old style hubs that came in the preunit bearing axles. IMO the older the axle the better untill you get to the closed low pinion D60 then stop there no one wants that shit.

    I was informing him

Yes I will be hacking all that radius arm bullshit. But I think the axle will be nice after that work. Gonna be extra work but either way it's what I'm personally going with.

Nothing wrong with it. I was just saying it's a shame you don't live closer cuz $400 bot a pair of axles and drive line parts is a sweet deal. I've installed 3 D60's in the last two months. Have another one to do this winter. Fucker got really lucky and picked up a 70's High pinion Kingpin 60 for $300.

Damn...i've never seen a d60 from the late 70s for less than $800 at least. It's usually between $800-1,500.

Also, some people get carried away thinking that SD axles are an easy plug and play. They can work but it's more work than what it seems at first.

Even more challenging with The 05' SD and newer D60s, they are so big it's not even a joke. They are also significantly wider than previous D60s. They are monster axles...a bit overkill to be honest. Probably a good option for the newer tacomas but i would prefer an old school d60 for the 1sr gen tacomas

    It would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard that there are shifter issues with the standard style shifters, people say that the handles end up by the dash (which I find hard to believe) but everyone who has stated that has a 2 speed atlas. The 4 speed obviously would push the shifters back a little bit more because of the extra length. I'm sure I can make standard shifters work with a little bit of cutting and welding

Anybody have the non trail gear part number for the splined coupler to mate a steering shaft to the stock 1st gen tacoma steering column? This would be a female style coupler.

So is the allpro SAS available for 2nd gen. The website gives the implications that it makes them for second gen too. Can anyone confirm this?

When I started mine, what they sent was their first gen kit, and they said they just use it on a second gen.

Just an FYI one of the part numbers is wrong in there. The part you need for the column for a 1st gen taco is: Borgeson 014925. its 11/16 36 spline.

Copy and pasted from another thread:

    Here's the deal:

I saw it on Facebook for cheap, the owner lived in Tennessee (I'm 7hrs away). I talked to him about it, decided I wanted it and offered to buy it. He said he would trailer it down for me. He said he'd been daily driving it and it was in good shape blah blah

I got financing and solidified the plan

He brought it down last night. It was dark as fuck, I'd already decided I wanted it from pictures he sent. He gave me a talk about what worked and what didn't, most of which was bullshit I found out later. But I gave him the check and he was gone

Supposedly on his way here, about 2 hrs out, his trailer got a flat, so he chained up the axle, unloaded Basketcase and drove it the rest of the way

He was driving it when it pulled into my driveway. If he drove it for 2hrs he's an IDIOT.

The brakes pretty much do nothing. There is no ebrake, he cut the cables off at the rear spring mount

The fabrication is horrible. Things hit eachother. Mounts are made wrong and poorly welded to rusty bits of nothing. The trans crossmember is hacked up to clear the links, which are too long, and the front driveshaft. The crossmember is also cracked.

The rear suspension looks stock except for a relocated shock tab on the axle and a piece of 2x2 square tubing thats used as a lift block.

The front CO's are old junk thats been painted

    All the welds are crap

Most importantly. The frame is a rusty mess. This is an 05 after all. No holes but definitely flakey. Probably would have gotten a free frame replacement if he'd just taken it to Toyota

    BUT

It was pretty cheap. Most the components I need are there and the stuff that needs replacing is at the upper end of my budget, but still within reach. Most importantly Eddy has my back on this one and if anyone can save it, Eddy can

    So here's whats gonna happen

I listed it for sale and if anyone wants to give me what I owe they can have it. I have the title right now but I have to mail it to the bank in about a week. If they can buy it before then I can pay off the loan and they can have it

    If not:

I'm pulling the bed and the cab off. Media blasting the frame. Grinding, cutting plating and reinforcing ever bit of rust damage
Rebuilding the front suspension so it isn't a complete cluster fuck, building new crossmembers ect. Swapping in a set of Chevy 63" springs and new rear shocks and coilovers up front.

If I can, I'm going to rent a storage unit in the same complex as Eddys shop so I can strip it and blast it. Then we can roll it over to him for unfucking. If not I'll be building some redneck shit in the back yard of my house (rental) and pulling the bed and cab there, blasting it, then have a rollback wrecker take it to him and bring it back.

I got screwed in the deal, but I also think the dude that sold it to me figured I wouldn't be able to fix it. He was partially correct...but I know a guy :)

So here it is, meet Basketcase, appropriately named:
