Watching the national news today and there was mention that this summer 2010, gas companies will be mandated to go to 15% ethanol fuel. The broadcaster said that vehicles prior to 2001 would not be able to run on this mixture...I was surprised that they would make such a statement...I know the fuel mpg sux the further you get into the ethanol enrichment, but he flat out said nothing before 2001 would run and you would have to hunt to find a station that carries fuel without ethanol and this would also cover smaller engines. I just got a new frame from Toyota this past summer and am not giving it up without a fight...Didn't know if anyone else saw this "news" release or can substantiate this guys claim..

Don't know how they could make a mandate that would take so many cars off the road. Is the government going to purchase newer cars for everyone who won't be able to run them anymore?

    LOL.

I'll take a Toyobama Tacomarack, please.

I thought every single gasoline engine could run on ethanol mixtures up to 15% without modification, and they have easily modified engines to run on 85% ethanol/gas, hence the term E85.

I actually like ethanol usage since I'm kind of a hippie.

I know there are downsides, though...

Yes, all normal gasoline engines can run with up to 15% ethanol mixture. There should be no problem as long as it's no more than 15% ethanol. That said...

It doesn't matter if you are a "hippie" or not. In fact, you should actually then be against ethanol. It takes way too much water to produce, uses corn and causes the price to skyrocket (which could instead be used for food or feed), wrecks engines, and actually decreases fuel mileage (because 15% mixed ethanol/gas is less volatile than pure gasoline and so it produces less energy per gallon).
That's just in a nutshell, though. I would hate to bore people with an essay.

There are many, many more downsides to ethanol than upsides. At least at this point in time.

When youre going for performance, and have the correct setup. E85 is like 110 race gas.. with many performance enhancing properties.

When we switch to 10 percent ethanol winter recipe i drop at least 10 percent fuel mileage....where's the benefit except maybe the farmers...not that there's anything wrong with farmers.

Sure, for the right engines. Not for a standard gasoline engine though.

Who's doing the mandating? Energy Department? EPA? Any online press statements from those who are mandating this?

Okay, that makes sense. I guess I've never looked too much at the downsides of it and just thought it was a good idea from the standpoint of less fossil fuel used=better.

And since it won't matter how bad ethanol is for your engine once petrol runs out, ethanol is still a viable alternative.

Huh. That's pretty cool, actually. I've heard of some racecars and exotics that run off gas and E85, but I always thought that was just for the fossil fuel independence.

I know that Ken Block runs E85 in his latest (badass) Subaru. If it works for Ken, it must be good.:D

Some guy using his puppets. He lives in a big house in the District of Columbia. He is interested in change almost for change sake. As long as the change finances or benefits those that he deems good. God Bless America.

well, to be honest, we may run out of petrol, but what we have is ass loads of is the dirty un-refined stuff...you know..stuff that you can make diesel out of...truth be known, diesel is the way of the future ladies and gentlemen...americans need to understand that heavy duty trucks arent the only thing that needs that application...ALL kinds of vehicles could benefit from a diesel application...or hell even getting a vehicle to run off straight up kerosene would work too

True. Most compact diesels are more fuel efficient than hybrids. Whether or not the benefits offset the costs of higher demand diesel, I dont know.
