First post. I am currently in the market for a Tacoma. I am trying to decide whether it's worth getting the upgraded appearance package that includes parking sonar and the navigation. The parking sonar is nice but i could definitely live without it to save $700. Is the navigation worth it? How hard is it to upgrade this in the future if needed?

The built-in nav hasn't failed me yet and I use it all the time. You could however use your phone instead which has proven downloadable navigation apps.

I got the appearance package without that extra navi, and it hasn't arrived yet, but I'm still getting navi functionality. The SR5 uses navi running through your cell phone, and the upgrade you're talking about lets you run it directly via satellite or something. I don't see the need. Seems wasteful.

Mine has the tech package and I've used the navi exactly zero times. I'd much rather use waze and just use the Bluetooth audio instead of having the visual display on the head unit.

Thanks for all the replies. The truck is on it's way! I was told it should arrive by dealer trade on Tuesday. It will be a 2016 Tacoma SR5 Double Cab Long Bed V6 4x4. I got the standard SR5 Appearance Package so it will have the scout GPS and no parking sonar. I think I'm pretty okay with that. Will be looking for ways to add it in in the future though.

What's the difference on SR5 packages DN vs. SN?

So how can u tell if u have the "appearance package" on your SR5......is it only the navi and parking sonar??

I own a SR5 4x4 red interior, color matched fender flares, chrome side steps tonneau cover...but doesnt have navi(i had to download Scout GPS) and it doesnt have the parking sonar

Don't mind the TRD grille i swapped it out for my SR5 I am on of those rare ones that actually love the chrome grille lol I think the Barcelona color can pull it off quite well if you ask me ;)

Waze is great. Only problem running it through Bluetooth is that you can't listen to music at the same time. Unless you run Spotify and Waze at the same time.

Not sure what the price difference is but, you may want to look at the TRD OR/sport. They come standard with Nav and a little more. I didn't upgrade to the premium tech package because I don't need the sonar, heated seats, dual zone climate control, and push button start. Got my TRD OR manual for $32k. Can't imagine the SR5 with appearance is all THAT much cheaper. Good luck!

I've never had a problem doing it as long as you're using an audio source from your phone. I usually use Iheart radio, radium, tune in radio, iTunes, or mlb app anyways. If you wanted to listen to fm you're correct.

I had no idea parking sonar was an option on anything other than the tech package.

I'm not sure either, but I got mine without tech pkg. I do know that, with the backup cam alone, I can get within an 1" of any object when reversing. The camera angle and view are that good! The blind spot assist...eh. Not a fan! More distracting than anything.

Re: the Nav, you're right about the iheart radio. When I said Spotify, i should've clarified what I meant. I meant to say, you need to run a music app in addition to Waze.

Thanks! I thought about the TRD but I am paying $33k for the SR5. I havent seen DCLB for a TRD in my area for less than $37k and it's not worth the jump for me.

You're smart for sticking with the SR5. I'd get the basic build with 4x4 if I had to do it all again.

Where are you located? 2017's come out soon. If you held out a month, I bet you get a 2016 TRD for $33k.

The base "SR5 Appearance Package" adds colored fender flares, autochromatic mirror, and 16" silver alloy wheels. Here are additional flavors of this package that add various things, one of which adds navi and sonar. Another version adds Tow Pkg.

In my opinion, before I spent a bunch of money on the lower model SR5, I would move up to the TRD models

I'm from Oregon. Maybe the no sales tax things gives me higher prices, but I've never been able to find equivalent deals as some of those posted to this forum. I asked when the 2017 were expected and they all said no word yet, but expected around sept/October which was just too long of a wait for me. Anyways, I feel good about my deal. Could it have been better? maybe but not by much I'd guess. supply for the trim and color I wanted was very low. I got the only 1 available now within a 300 mile radius. Only 1 other on freight available in 2 weeks and literally every other one was sold.

meh, I have the TRD /OR with everything including JBL. It's a $40k truck out the door. Most of the bells and whistles are above and beyond what anyone actually needs.
