3rd Gen DIY maintenance quick reference

I always engage man 4wd about once a month for a block or two. It keeps everything in the gearbox lubed up.

 

It advises in the owners manual to engage it at least ten miles each month page 247

 

I see. I need to go off road for these miles? I live in the big city.

 

NO, you can engage the 4hi anytime as long as you are driving in a straight line... Pavement and turns do not like 4X4's...

 

Manual says not to use 4wd on dry pavement due to no center diff that can split load between front and rear. But anything straight or long sweeping curves that you can do comfortably at higher speed, say 35mph+, should never cause a problem. I do it all the time on the way to work in my 4Runner with the same setup.

Does the diff fluid need an LSD additive or is Mobil 1 75-90 just fine?

 

Don't need LSD additive as yours is not Limited Slip.

So I am no expert but the type of fluid recommend is LF. There is some concern that the amsoil and mobile 1 Etc.. Have a high phosphate concentrate which can cause soft metals such as copper and brass to deteriorate. There may be brass bushings used in the Synchros in the transfer case. Royal purple makes a product called Synchromax that is considered an LF type fluid that does not effect the soft metals. I contacted Royal purple, if you go to their site you see my question and they recommend Synchromax as the correct replacement fluid for LF. They also warranty replacement and repair cost if it is shown their product caused damage to the transfer case. All that being said, I went to three dealerships asking for the LF fluid and the parts guys looked at me like I was crazy. They said they just replace it with bulk gear oil.

 

I'm not surprised the dealer didn't know I went to mine for an oil filter and he gave me one for a 4Runner because he didn't know what it took and couldn't find it any where. I gave him the part number and he wrote it down so he would know for future reference. I've used Royal Purple syncromax in my Jeep for years with great results so I will be putting it in mine when I change it.

 

Haven't used it yet in my 2016 but it's much better than the standard Toyota stuff in my opinion.
Toyota should thank those who put Amsoil in their trucks, I'm not worried about it.

Ah I knew about all that. Not sure about a tranny thermostat though?

 

It's the first picture. For the tow package, the thermostatic valve needs to be locked in the open position to get a proper read on the fluid level.
