Need help identifying this drive-line squeal (video)

Alright guys, I need your help. On my way home from work today this horrendous squeal started. I'm pretty sure I know what'll fix it but I'd like some confirmation. It sounds exactly like a squealing belt, but I promise it's coming from the center support bearing area. It starts up at 30 mph and stops once I decelerate to 20 mph.

I know it's this because I don't currently have carpet in my truck and can hear the road noise very clearly. The reason I don't have carpet in is most likely the cause of the noise too. I went wheeling last weekend and got stuck in some water, and some of it got in the cab.

Anyways, it seems like the water messed with the U joint and now (I think) it needs to get regreased. Will this solve the problem?

So later in the day after this video was taken the squeal self fixed itself (the best kind!). Fast forward a couple months and I went wheeling again and right after the squeal started back up, so it's definitely associated somehow.

I just greased the U-Joints today with some Mobil 1 Synthetic and usually all the old grease gets pushed out, but nothing was coming out. Went for a test drive and the squeal was still there.

Thoughts?

 

If your u-joints did not pass the old grease out, then you weren't successful at greasing them - either your grease gun is airlocked, empty, or you simply didn't give them enough pumps. How many pumps did you do per u-joint before you stopped?

That said, my bet is the carrier bearing is the source of your noise, it doesn't sound like a u-joint from what I can hear in your video.

 

More than likely I wasn't successful at greasing them. I just bought it today and was trying to figure out how to use it. I know it was pumping grease, and after about 6 pumps, the new grease would ooze out of the fitting. I assumed I was doing something wrong but I wasn't sure what.

I was thinking it was the carrier bearing too. Are there any remedies? Or should I just replace it?

 

CB is sealed and non-serviceable, so would need replacement if it is indeed the problem. Remove the mounting bolts and spin the outer bracket around the shaft , if rough or noisy, then you're confirmed the CB is your issue.

Ended up messing with the gun some more and was able to get the old grease out. Went for another test drive and the squeal was still there, although it seemed quieter (probably in my head).

I unbolted the carrier bearing and inspected it, and it seemed fine. No excess play or anything, just dirty. I'm guessing that some dirt or sand got in it somehow and that's what's causing it.

 

Shit, I just remembered, my truck is new! I'll just clean it super well, under body and all, take off some of the off-road stuff, and take it to the dealer and see if they'll replace it.

 

If its a 6 speed. it sounds like the throw out bearing squealing on the pressure plate.

 

It's a 6 speed, but it will still make the noise if I'm coasting in neutral. Does that till apply?

 

Push the clutch in and see if it still makes the noise.

 

I did some reading on it and the symptoms don't match up. I appreciate the input though!

I just decided to let the dealer with it and have them fix it under warranty.

 

CB or U joint. easy fixes, and if its under warranty have em change it.

 

Dealership take care of this under warranty?

 

I took it in, but they didn't have enough time left before closing to properly diagnose it. I since went out of town, so now I'm waiting for a convenient time to drop my truck off and leave it with them for a saturday.
