Oil Light & Engine Light Issue

Help!!!. I got in my truck today to take care of some errands and it would not start.

I noticed that the check engine and oil light were on. The engine did crank, but did not start. These two lights were the only ones that remained on. My truck is a 2009 Taco Prerunner. Only 7 months old. I suspected the oil pump might be bad or that the oil filter might be clogged. ( I religiously change my oil and filter every 3K miles.) I decided to go ahead and change my oil even though it had only been changed about 1K miles ago, hoping it was a clogged oil filter.

My truck started after the oil change! It was a rough crank, but it starts smoothly now. My worry is that the issue might still be caused by something else. When I turn my key to the start position before cranking the oil and check engine ligh remain on after all the other lights go off. They turn off after starting my truck. I have attached a picture.

Does anyone else with a 2nd Gen Taco have these 2 lights remain on with the key in the start position?

 

12K on the odometer, looks like a trip to the dealership to me.

Fram PH3614 is the filter I use.

 

Don't use Fram filters. They aren't good quality anymore. Use a stock toyota,wix,mobil1,anything but fram. Look on youtube when they cut them open. They've been known to collapse internally from cheap construction. Anyway your oil light will come on until you have oil pressure. Oil won't prevent your engine from starting, unless you ran it lpw and smoked the bearings, which would seize it not allowing it to crank.

 

Good to know. Can anyone with a 2nd gen Taco put their key in the ignition and turn it to the start position without cranking and let me know if the same lights stay on? I can't remember if these lights always came on or if I am just not noticing them because my truck did not start earlier.

 

bad,bad,bad.ive seen one of these collapse while running on buddys built 350.wasnt pretty.lots of $ to fix.

 

Make sure you reset the oil change light as well, after 6000 mi the light will stay on. It blinks when you turn the key to the on position, 4 or 6 times. Don't think that would have anything to do with your truck not starting, maybe it want you to take it 4wheeling instead of getting groceries

 

I am going to cut open my used Fram filter tomorrow. I saw some shocking videos on You Tube. If it did collapse, I will be telling everyone to stay away from Fram. Guess I will be buying stock toyota filters from now on.

Urban legend..... All filters can fail (any thing made by man).

I know I'll get flamed but Fram filters are usable filters...
Are there better filters, sure, but I used Fram filters for years in all kinds of cars and trucks with out one problem (even on my Taco)

PS: OP, Check your battery.....

 

Battery is good. My truck started fine after replacing filter. I will be cutting the old filter open later this afternoon and posting pics.

I just went out in a Blizzard and I have the same three lights remain on till I start it. Truck works great.

Here they are. The filter did not seem as bad as I expected it to. I did not see any indication of it jammed or clogged, but then again this is the first time I have ever opened up a used oil filter.

 

Looks ok. I would still run another brand just for peace of mind, just my .02 though.

 

Agreed....the filter element looks like crap. Honestly, a coffee filter would of been a better option. There are some around here at TW that will vehemently defend Fram, but honestly better filters can be had for the same or less money. Try to stick to a filter that uses a Silicone ADBV since our filters are mounted horizontally on the engine. I prefer Napa Gold's and PureOne's.
