Think I just got buzzed by a B-24? Didn't get to the window in time to catch a good look but pretty sure it had a "H" shaped tail section....loud as hell, definitely not one of the regular commercial flights

2 engines or 4? There are VERY FEW 24s left in the world, but dozens of 25s. B-25 Mitchells have 2 engines, while the B-24 Liberator has 4.

Which is louder? The legacy flight or whatever they call themselves drop in every year, maybe it's them....driving by in a few to check out the airport.

Had to go look it up. There are in fact only 2 Liberators still capable of flying; Diamond Lil and Witchcraft.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_surviving_Consolidated_B-24_Liberators

They're both loud - rotary engines are loud in general, and that Pratt-Whitney Wasp was a perfect example. B-25s are noisy enough with their two engines, but also very nimble.

    B-24s Diamond Lil and Witchcraft:

About 15 pages ago or so, I posted a shot of me :anonymous: inside the Witchcraft back when I was a flight instructor.

The propeller is mounted direct drive to the crankshaft, there isn't a transmission or clutch. Some aircraft have a gear box to reduce crankshaft RPM to propeller RPM. As propellers have a specific RPM range to operate in for efficiency. The engine may turn 5,500 RPM but the prop is useless at that speeds and is slowed down to anywhere between 3,300 RPM to 1,700 RPM. Depending on the application

By turning the propeller, you turn all the accessories as well. Depending on the application it will also turn the ignition magnetos, oil & fuel pumps, rocker arms and valves, etc... Generally a "DO NOT TOUCH" or "DO NOT MOVE PROPELLER" streamer is placed on the prop during maintenance.

    Edit:

Also that particular airplane has what is called a contra-rotating propeller. The three blades on the front of the hub rotate in the opposite direction on the rear blades. To improve the aerodynamic thrust of the propeller, as well as reduce what is known as left turning tendencies of the propeller. That plane was most often photographed with the blades positioned in a certain way, either both blades in the same position to create a Y or with them staggered to create a large *

could have been a 25, all i could clearly identify was the two vertical sections on the tail...too far away to get anymore detail. and nothing at the airport when i drove by unless they were hiding behind some of the hangers.

...^^^... Thanks for posting these photos and showing them side by side ... with explanations too.

I can't keep WW2 aircraft model numbers straight, especially the bombers.

Sounds similar to a B17 if my memory is working right. Those landing gear fold away in a strange way, not to mention it took forever!
