You'll never get retail money by selling it to a dealer. They have to be able to sell it at or near that retail price and turn a profit. To do that...they have to have less than retail money tied up in it. Nothing evil about that. It's a for-profit business, not the Salvation Army. :notsure:

I sold a leased vehicle to a dealership once. And I'll never do it again... I leased a 2012 Subaru WRX Limited in mid 2012. Total purchase price was $31.5k and I put right around $3k down. Nine months and 4500 miles later I was looking to unload the car in favor of something larger and more practical. I was nowhere near the miles I'd paid for on the lease and KBB told me the car was worth $28k - $29k. I ended up selling the car to a local Subaru dealership for $26.5k which was about $500 less than the buyout on my lease. In hindsight I would have been much better off listing the car on swapalease.com or autotrader and trying to sell it private party. Because I sold it to the dealership instead of being patient and selling it private party, I forfeited my $3k down payment and had to fork out an additional $500. I probably could have made back most of my down payment if I'd have sold the car myself but I was impatient and unwise...

I know that. I'm not sure where the misconception came from I'm not trying to get like 33k from a dealer for it, but 22k from anyone is pretty low.

Don't get your hopes up man, their offer will be on par with CarMax if not worse...

    Maybe you were wise.

Selling a vehicle privately is no fun, with all the tire kickers just dying to try out your WRX with no serious intentions.

This was the kbb instant cash offer.
I'm taking it in tomorrow to one of the dealers on the list tomorrow.

Haha, good point. I definitely weighed the pros and cons of selling it myself versus trading it in or selling it back to Subaru.

I actually had the car listed on Craigslist for a month or two before I sold it to the dealership and I only had a few scammers and "tire kickers" contact me. Ironically the dealership that bought it actually contacted me initially through Craigslist!

Damn, that's impressive. Good for you.

And here in the Midwest, that KBB trade in offer service is a joke... Every time I've tried it their offer has been thousands below KBB trade in.

Wasn't directed at you. But these types of threads always follow the same path....."the 'stealership' low-balled".....blah, blah, blah. A vehicle is a depreciating asset from the moment you turn the key for the first time. Market value can influence it one way or the other, but it will never be a investment. 99% of the time a used vehicle will never be worth retail money on a trade-in....even if that used vehicle is barely used at all....it's still "used".

We buyers are 2-faced. We want to buy the dealer's vehicle for as little as possible. Yet throw a hissy-fit when the dealer wants to do the same thing on our trade-in. We want to save as much money as we can....they want to make as much as they can. Not a damn thing wrong with either of those.

    Update for anyone who cares.

Went ahead and sold my truck today.
The dealer offered me basically what KBB said they would. Overall I am happy with the offer and happy to be bringing another truck home in the next few days.
