Brake Noise???????

Ok I have about 58k on my truck and have never changed the brakes. I tow alot especially in the summer. I took my truck about 6 months ago (approx 50k) to get the brakes check and they said it had over 50% of the brake pades left. My truck had made a noise in the front end when I hit the brakes. This is the complicated part. The noise only comes when I hit the brakes the first time after driving in reverse and hitting the brakes then driving forward and hitting the brakes. It never makes the noise after the first time of hitting the brakes in forwards or reverse. Does that make sense? I have put the truck in 4x4 and it still makes the noise. It doesn't make any noise turning or any other time. I have look under the front end and dont see anything unusual. The only thing I noticed was that it seems that my brake pads on the drivers side are loose inside the brake caliper. So evertime i hit the brakes it moves one way or the other. Has anyone else experienced this. Am I crazy? When has everyone else changed there front and rear brakes?

 

I know my brakes squeak every once in a while and I only have about 29,300 miles on my truck. It has been doing it for a while now. Chris4x4 said its normal though so I dont sweat it.

 

Ya,im at 82k miles and occasionally my breaks squeek when I lightly engage and first start driving in the day. Then it goes away.

 

Clunking sound rather than a squeal I would guess? Sounds to me like a retaining clip or spring is loose, missing or broken. That may be allowing your pads to move forward and backward in the caliper. They really shouldn't move around in the caliper.

 

If your talking about a "rattle," it's normal. Mine does this too. It's just the pads shifting in the direction the rotor is spinning when the brakes are applied. Nothing to worry too much about.

 

I think that it has to be a loose brake pad bc it makes more of a clanking noise than a squeak. How could my pad be loose inside the calipers?

 

did you fix this? my truck is doing this. forward/reverse...a clacking sound. i will wait for daylight, and check it out. i suspect a clip is gone or broken. fun..i have 3 days before a roadtrip. i will probably just change out my 50% pads.

my old pads shifted every so slightly. so the pad change looked simple enough. (exactly the same procedure as my 1981 porsche 911SC!!). pads definitely at 50%. no harm tossing in some new stuff. quick pad change, and VIOLA! the noise is gone. (for now). pedal tautness also improve immensely.

No I never changed them. I think that I'm going to try and take a look at the pads in the next few weeks... I guess I'm just used to it since they hae been doing this for about 9 months.
