I have a 2001, 6 cylinder, doublecab, automatic tacoma. It makes a tapping noise while running that gets faster as the engine revs up, and a little louder up until around 40 mph when it starts to be drowned out by road noise. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for diagnosing the problem, or what would actually need to be done to fix it. Any help would be appreciated.

I never worked on these trucks before and dont know the design of the engine. Could be something in your valve train assembly, I had a 240z datsun that made a similar noise and turned out to be some worn out rocker arms and shims. Could also be related to a exhaust manifold leak maybe.

It definitely sounded like it was coming from the engine. I'll have to check the exhaust, but it doesn't sound like a noise that the exhaust could make.

It's a little different than the loose fan clutch noise, because I heard that one too, right after I changed my belts. I tighten them down a little more and that noise hasn't come back.

I might have to find a good shop and take it in if it's the valve train. Is that usually a really expensive job?

Have you checked the spark plugs? A loose plug can make a ticking noise. You might check them to see if they are snug. On a 2000 3.4 like mine they should be torqued to 13 ft lbs (Probably the same on yours).

I'll double check the plugs too. I installed a new set myself about a month ago and it was making the noise before and after. I'll get out a torque wrench and make sure they're all at 13 still.

positive you dont have a crack in the manifold? it will spit out exhaust and somewhat sound like a ticking/tapping noise

I made sure all of the spark plugs were torqued properly and it nothing changed. Is there a usual place that these manifolds crack? I'll go outside when it cools off a little and check that out.

not sure about tacoma manifolds but other cars ive worked on would crack around the flanges or near the runners right before the flange.

My truck has a tick like that for only a few minutes , when you first start it in the morning .
As it starts to warm up , it goes away, and after it has been driven for an hour, you dont hear anything.
I think it is an exhaust leak, tho I can't find it .
Depending on the temperature outside , it has been in the 80* 's there is even less sound.
When the engine is cooler , when accelerating you can hear it also , once fully warm, it is barely noticeable.

I use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope, and it is on the driver side center cylinder .
I replaced the heads, both sides , as they were cracked , and did not think to have them surfaced , only home surfaced them with my belt sander and 36 grit.
New gaskets all the way thru the system, including the funky crossover .
Use the stethoscope method to pinpoint the noise.

It may be a valve , and adjustment is a lot of work.
They are adjusted with shims, and a full set of shims is 300.00 from toyota.
You only need one from the sound, that is 8.00 - 9.00 , plus gaskets since you have to remove the intake , if it is the driver side .

All the usual diesel truck mods- fuel system upgrade, programmer, CAI, intake manifold, 60MM stealth turbo
Agree with above also along with any other source of exhaust leak. Also could be sticking valve lifter. Even fuel injectors make a ticking noise. For the hell of it make sure you've got oil in the truck too
