Seaport has a few nice rooftop bars/restaurants but they're pricey. Along with that area along the harbor from seaport to the north end. Faniuel Hall / North End for food (italian district) / South Boston has Castle beach which is a nice place to walk around. If you're into history you can follow the freedom trail or whatever its called and it has historical stops along the way. Old North Church is one of the oldest churches in the country I believe.

The list goes on - if you want to venture out of the city Lexington area has some of the battle grounds of the civil war and some iconic historical locations. Or head up north to see the foliage which might be shifting by late August.

Spent a week there in April and loved it. If you don't rent a car, get a 7 day Metro pass. It costs $19 and is good for as many times as you want to use it. Walk the Freedom Trail. It starts at the Boston Commons and takes you to Charlestown. You can buy a guide book at the start or get an app for your phone. Make sure you visit the USS Constitution, which is at the end of the walk.

Go to Quincy and visit John Adams home. Go to UMass Boston and visit the Kennedy Presidential Library. Take a tour of Harvard campus. Visit the campus of MIT.

As someone has already mentioned, visit Fanuel Hall and go to Quincy Marketplace. Quincy Marketplace is a great place to eat. Go the north end and eat at one of the many Italian restaurants.

And by all means, don't miss Mike's Pastry in the north end. Be sure to get a pastry called the Lobster Tail. Other places have them, but Mike's is the best.

There are some great old churches near the Boston Library.

If you rent a car, head up to Lexington and Concord

Union Oyster House makes good fried oyster plates. Mike's pastry on Hanover street in the north end makes killer cannoli's. The Florentine is a peanut shell and is fantastic. Meausum of Science is pretty good. I haven't been there in a while but they used to have a killer IMAX theater that was the entire dome of the ceiling. For sightseeing, there are trollies that go to all of the historical spots.

There's bars a-plenty in Beantown. Unfortunately the bar scene is much different in August than it is Sept-June. Boston is a very small city and just about doubles in population when the colleges are back in session. There are some beaches but most Bostonians head to Cape Cod for their beach fix. But as mentioned, Fanuel Hall has a few great bars.

2 random places i always loved:

the silhouette in allston is a great dive bar. beer, darts, free popcorn.

coolidge corner theater in brookline is a sweet old school movie theater. you'll find more artsy or independent films there, and old classics at midnight.

Toro is great, love that place. I also live around food. My absolute favorite place to eat in the city is Abe and Louie's. Fantastic, first rate steak house.

Another Vote for Mike's Pastry, Quincy Market, and the Freedom Trail. Oh and don't forget Mike's Pastry! I love the Pistachio cookies cannot finish a lobster tail.

If you're into live music, check the concert listings for House of Blues..right across from Fenway on Lansdowne St

You can't swing a dead cat in Boston without hitting a bar! House of Blues is a good time if you catch a good band.

As far as a good beach, rent a car and drive south to the Cape or Newport R.I. area.
