Initial oil change mileage

When should you change your oil initialy. I've got 3500 on it and bought the oil and filter to change out but when i checked the dip stick it was just a nice brown. I'm wondering if Toyota initialy puts a good synthetic it and changing it now would just be wasting money?

 

change it now.....it'll get out all the break in crap. and toyota doesnt use synthetic, just regular dino.

 

You have a service light that comes on at 5,000 miles. This is when you change the oil. You can change it now; but at 5,000 miles you will get the service light. I would change it again so you get on the cycle. You may be able to reset the service light now without it being on. Not sure, I have not tried it.

I have never used synthetic. I have used a synthetic blend a few times. I have 88,000 miles and going strong.

Also to reset the service light. Press the odometer reset button & hold it, then turn the ignition on to all the lights, wait a few seconds & the service light will flash & go out. Then it is reset for another 5,000 miles.

 

Thanks for the fast response! I better quit drinking beer and go change it! Synth is better but if you change it every 3000-3500 I don't think it matters. Anyone have a filter preference? I been studying. Think next time I'll just go Wix or Napa, same thing.

 

drink beer while you change it!! i like using mobil1 filters, but wix/napa filters are good filters too. and yeah......if you are gonna be changing oil every 3k to 3500 miles.......sticking with a good dino will work. i change my oil every 5k, but i run mobil1 or pennzoil platinum synthetic.

 

I change every 5,000. I used to do it myself. But usually have the dealer or some other shop do it when I'm out running errands.

^Not to be a jerk BUT, neither of those links mean anything. The bottom one is an Amsoil site: http://www.performanceoilnews.com/contact.shtml so there wouldn't be a bias or anything there, right? The top one is simply an opinion site and it involves no scientific testing whatsoever, unless you think some guy clicking 1 through 5 on the internet is "scientific".

About 20 years ago my brother who is a petroleum engineer had a print out that he aquired from somewhere on the testing of motor oils; both synthetic and refined crude. Mobil1 was ranked number one overall for both syn and crude oil catergories. The first place finisher for crude oil was Pennzoil PZL Turbo. The Pennzoil PZL Turbo was specically formulated for the hotter running turbo motors. I used the PZL for years until it no longer became available for me to purchase. I presume that Mobil1 is still ranked number one overall but I don't know which crude is ranked number one. If anyone here knows please post it.
