Just went and shot a few pictures with a 55-200mm lens I have and sent them to my phone. Came out crystal clear. So what does that mean for the other lens? Is there anything I can do or do I have to take it to be serviced? Kind of bummed because I use that lens 90% of the time.

At least you know it is the lens and not the camera body. You can call around and ask local camera shops for a cost estimate on service as well as sending it into Nikon. I would also check craigslist and maybe even ebay for another as it sounds like that is the relatively cheap kit lens so repair cost could end up being close to what you would be able to buy another one for. Fortunately people tend to sell those lenses as they upgrade to higher quality ones over the same zoom range. I found a Nikon 18-55 lens on craigslist locally for $60. I'm not familiar with Nikon but I am guessing it may be the same lens. Or you could put that money towards an even more capable lens.

What's another lens you would suggest?

I honestly do not know. I shoot with a Canon and just have Canon lenses so I am not familiar even with the other brands that have mounts for various cameras. Hopefully someone on here can chime in and give you some suggestions.

I picked up a used "kit" 18-55mm lens since I had a mishap with my other one and it broke.

look into the Nikkor 35mm Prime Lens, I love that lens, freakin amazing quality

Does the 35 mm do good as an all around lens? And what'd you pay for yours? Amazon has one for 165 and don't really know what I'm looking for.

EDIT: after some looking, seems like the 35mm may be what I'm looking for. A lot of people recommend a filter to go with it (52mm) do you recommend this as well? Thanks for all the help.

The 35mm lens is a great all around lens. Remember it is a prime lens though so it will not have a zoom on it. Your feet will be your zoom but it actually stays on my camera 90% of the time.

The big question for you to answer is how often you zoom the lens and how often you really need to. Picking the right lens starts with knowing what range you will use or need and then finding the option that fits your budget. That ends up being a very individual decision.

Do not be afraid to look at refurbished lenses as they can be bought for a discount and will look and perform like new. My last lens was a refurb and I will look at those first for future purchases.

24-104 is a pretty decent range for a walk-around zoom lens. Any prime in that range is going to do well but if you want something for all-around goodness, I'd probably lean more toward a 50...but the choice is hard. If you have a Canon camera, the plastic 35 and 50 are pretty decent lenses.

Someone suggested the used market. Buy from a reputable source and you'll be fine with a used lens.

What's some reputable used dealers? Alfuh has me pretty sold on the 35mm with his pictures since my typical shots I am just getting out and walking to get the best shot. Similar to his. And I always have the 55-120 that came with the kit if I needed it.

Doesn't have to be a dealer. Could be an individual. I've bought used stuff off of Fredmiranda.com, dgrin.com, and one or two others. I try and check out the person as best I can-no paypal "gift" transactions unless I know someone. KEH.com, B&H, and I suppose others in the commercial space are OK.

Don't forget you can rent through a couple online sites also to see if the lens is for you or not.

Didn't want to clog this section up with a new thread, so I'm posting here. Does anyone have any suggestions for a free basic photo editing software? I mostly need the ability to convert formats and resize. If this has been answered, I'm sorry, my searching skills leave much to be desired.
