Problems with brakes or ABS?

Was wondering if anyone has had any problems with brakes. Today I was going to the local beach and went to pull up on the banking of the side of the road (which I guess is fairly steep but nothing crazy a nissain maxima was parked in front of me) when all of a sudden the pedal went to the floor and began to shudder for a few seconds. I freaked out because I came within inches to the car in front of me. It was almost like the truck sped up. I was preparing for impact and new lights and bumper.

It was kind of a freak thing I guess, but then later in the day when no cars were around I was able to recreate the problem. Has anyone else experienced this? I dont know if it was the angle of the truck and turning the wheel with the breaks applied it did not like or what. I figured it could handle it being a 4x4. I do not have the TRD package but it should be fine. I'm going to call the dealer tommorow to see what they say. I recently had the suspension TSB done would that affect it? Its nerve racking thinking my brakes are not going to work at stop lights and stuff now. Would love to hear what anyone has to say thanks.

 

sounds like the abs kicking in when you pulled off the road, which is normal.....but something you definitely gotta get used to. the pedal going all the way to the floor though......thats weird.

 

IMO it's the ABS.....Could you hear it as well?.....grinding,buzzing noise.

 

Did it feel like a machine-gun under your foot? I agree with the others that it sounds like the ABS.

Exactly.....I've had lots of vehicles with ABS but the Tacoma's seems particularily,....um......Spirited!

 

spirited is a great term for it!!!

 

+1 on the ABS- You'll push the pedal all the way you can and the truck will decide how to adjust the brakes- so you'll end up with that rattling.
Just keep it in mind...You'll settle into it eventually.

 

You have to get used to the ABS system on this trucks, its extremely sensitive, it starts buzzing then the pedal starts moving, just hang on and keep braking until you stop...

 

Like everyone else said, it's "normal" for this ABS system. Head over to the thread in my sig to wire in a kill switch for it.

And your experience is EXACTLY why the kill switch wiring was figured out. Same thing happens on snow, ice, dirt trails, etc. Essentially any loose terrain makes the ABS freak out and potentially take MUCH longer to stop the vehicle.

If I'm on a trail an NEED to stop before a tree, cliff, rock, etc I want to stop NOW! Not when the ABS thinks it's safe enough or that I should be able to maneuver around it. Kinda funny when most driver's ed. classes and conventional wisdom say no sudden moves on snow or ice (or any loose terrain I suppose). So having the ABS unlock the brakes so you can swerve on snow/ice/gravel helps how....?
