The original! Relentless fab tailgate reinforcements

Yep available and in stock, both aluminum and steel, and bare or powder coated finish. Just no diamond plate, havent done any batches of them for at least the last 6 months. The diamond plate is not the most popular.

 

Would it not be possible to also fold over the "bottom edge" of the tailgate reinforcement as well, increasing the overall strength of the bottom edge? Seems quite doable.

 

Possibly, I was just talking about doing just that with another customer the other day, we'd have to do a bit of measuring and test fitting to see if it would fit

 

Probably wouldn't have to have much of fold, maybe 3/4" and it would make a huge stiffness gain at the edge.

 

From my experience fitting one of these on a 15, it could make installation extremely tight or nearly impossible unless some additional depth were added to keep that new break across the bottom about 1/2 inch or so away from the bottom of the gate structure.

In other words, don't increase overall size and break right at the bottom edge. Instead, add enough material to break it a bit farther out, so there is some play to accommodate installation.

Another issue is that it would also affect the ability to re-use the fiberglass cover over the reinforcement plate, because it curves around the lower edge as is. With the plate underneath, it contacts the end of the bed. This may not be an issue for folks who wish to use it bare, but I found the fiberglass cover eases material loading and unloading.

The 15 does have additional screws sticking out of the top corners that make it nearly impossible to install the plate as it is unless you remove the screws.

I recommend careful fitment R&D on a prototype first.

 

What do you have in stock for a 95.5 Tacoma 4x4? I was contemplating a new tailgate because mine was beat to crap by the previous owner, but this looks like it would hide the beat up inside of the tailgate as shore up the beat up top and bend in the middle!

 

For those that reused the stock plastic on top of the alum plate, did you have to buy all new longer fasteners, or do the stock ones still work?

 

Just drilled out the holes in the factory piece to make them large enough.

Worked perfect.

 

Question for you. I Read that initially you just used the reinforcement, for a few weeks, then added back the stock cover over the reinforcement? Just curious why. thanks

 

I didn't want to see scratched up powdercoat every day. Only reason.

I'd rather abuse a piece of fiberglass.

I've thought about it! But they seem to be reasonably strong from the factory. I'll think about it some more.

 

Just got mine last week. Installed it Friday. I must say I like the difference. Nice workmen Ship!!

 

Do it! Better safe than sorry but yea I'm sure the tailgates can handle ~200lbs safely. I just like having things overbuilt, haha.

When I installed mine, I used the factory fiberglass over it.

However, I'm thinking of removing it and doing outdoor carpet with rubber padding underneath. Y'all have any suggestions for that?
