Wind Noise

Happy New Year to all! This is my first post on this forum. I have a 2008 Tacoma Access cab that I have had for two years. I really like the truck and would buy another in a heartbeat. I only have 11,000 miles on mine, so that will be a while though. The only problem that I have had and still have is wind noise when on the highway. I took it back to my selling dealer when it was new because, I noticed the excessive wind noise and also, the weather stripping on the drivers door was squashed. They just blew it off and said it does not make any difference and that wind noise with the access cab is normal. This is my fourth Toyota truck and I have never had this before, so I took it to another dealer. They just looked at the door and said it was wrong and had to be replaced, which they did. That side is better now, but I still have a lot of wind noise when on the highway. I have had several people comment on how noisy my truck is inside from the wind. Last week, twice my wife commented on it and she is hard of hearing.

My question as you probably already know is, do all of the 2008 access cabs have this much wind noise? I really find it hard to believe that Toyota would put a truck out that has this much noise inside.

If you have had this problem could you please tell me what you, or your dealer did to fix it. Thank you for any feedback that I get.

 

Well i have an 07 access cab, the only noise i had from the wind was from my windshield. I got it fixed at the dealership and no problems, but i have never had any wind noise from either door.

The only wind noise I typically hear is coming from the BOTTOM and SIDE of my doors. Apparently the seals are well away from the edge of the sheet metal and wind can whoosh around between the door and the cab body.

I do not hear much wind around the top of the doors.

You didn't say where your stripping was replaced... was it top, side, bottom or all around?

I plan to do something similar to this page in the near future to take care of the wind between the door and cab body.

 

My 08 access cab is the noisiest vehicle I have ever had and I have been buying new Toyota's starting way back in 1979
This one always makes me think the passenger window is cracked open.

I've had luck cleaning the door edges & seals and then treating all the seals with 303. I do this about once every 6 months. Mine wasn't terribly bad though...

 

Mine sucks. Toyota quality is going in the shitter. My dash rattles, my truck has tons of wind noise, the steering feels loose. I am glad it is a lease.

 

Cover area with soap (appropriate soap, like car wash det) and turn blower on. Watch for bubbles etc.

 

I'm taking it in to the dealer who replaced the entire weather stripping on the drivers door this morning. The wind noise seems to be coming from the passenger side. If I am driving north or south and the wind is east or west, you can actually hear it whistle.

I really like the truck, but this wind noise drives me crazy!

 

Well, when the mechanic drove with me he said the wind noise was not normal. I dropped it off yesterday and they called me about six hours later and said the mechanic said the noise is normal. I told them that that was unacceptable and now it is in their body shop today. I really don't think they are going to be able to get rid of the wind noise.

It sure is a sad day when my son's GMC Colorado is put together better than my Tacoma. His truck is very quiet compared to mine.

 

I had a friend who drove an ext cab Silverado (I think it was a 05, before they changed the body style). He would get tons of wind noise on the highway from the rear pop out windows, when closed. He now has a new ext cab Silverado and the rear windows move up and down (like the front) and he no longer experiences the wind noise.

I’m not sure how the Tacoma’s windows are in the access cab, but that could be an issue.

 

I never looked to see if they open. How is your double cab for wind noise?

 

My double cab sounds like like a hurricane when I go over 65 mph. I am very disappointed in the quality direction of Toyota. I am considering my next truck/suv be a Nissan since they quality of each is getting to be very similar and Nissans are cheaper.

 

My double cab does pretty well. The first time I drove it on the highway I was surprised how much quieter it was then my old Chevy s-10. There is of course still some noise, but nothing that bothers me or any passengers.

One thing we did in my friends old Silverado was pull the rear windows closed tight while driving on the highway and see if that stops most of the wind noise. That will help locate the issue or at least check another thing off the list.

 

I usually have loud music playing in my truck, so I don't notice anything.

 

I have a new '09 (Purchased in September '09) with 3300+ miles. Mine is an Access Cab and I have wind noise also. At first I thought it was the seals on the drivers side doors but, after taking it through a high pressure car wash with no leaks, I ruled out the seals. It took a while but I determined that it is coming from the rear sliding window. I haven't done anything about it yet and I'm not sure that I am going to as it really doesn't bother me that much. In addition, I put dual exhausts on it so the muffler noise sort of balances out the wind noise.

I bought my '09 AC in October, 2008 and have 26,000 miles on it. When we bought it my wife commented on how quiet it is. It is much quieter than the 2001 VW Jetta it replaced.

 

Just called the dealership this morning to check on my truck. Due to the inclement weather we had yesterday they still have not sent the truck to the body shop. I did not realize it is 30 miles from the dealership. The service advisor said he drove the truck and thought the wind noise was normal. I had asked about the recall on the windshield and he said he was not going to pull the windshield when the noise is coming from the back doors. WHAT??????????

My thinking is that if you had a leak in the windshield and the air was coming in, it has to go back out somwhere's. I would think it would find the area of reast resistance and that would create a wind noise.

I am going to pick it up today and just live with it, but this is not what I am used to from Toyota.
