Recent 2nd owner .. thought it was good as only had 35,000 miles.. But, the engine never did sound...right. I've driven it about 6,000 miles and now the engine clicking noise.. got louder.. So the truck of my dreams is at my mechanic.. I read some old articles about this issue and will call him and suggest he read.. Hoping there is more recent information about this. Safe journeys to all...

Welcome to TW. The 4.0s are notorious for ticking and it is normal. It is known as the taco tick, and is most prevalent under load/acceleration. Mine did this brand new and drove me crazy. Is yours making the noise all the time?

Smart to have it looked at but it seems a lot of 4.0s do it

There's a very good chance it's simply the "Taco Tick". The fluttering/ticking sound is typical of MOST Toyota engines (my 2005 Camry SE 3.3L did it too).

However, a sound clip will help folks determine if it sounds like all our trucks do. ;)

If your mechanic does a lot of import work (Toyotas, for example) he may very well tell you it's normal - or identify it as an entirely different issue.

Here's a good example of "Taco Tick"
