OP- drive them both and decide which you like better.

As far as cab and bed configuration- I would opt for a long bed, especially if you foresee hauling lumber or building / home supplies. The short beds are simply puny for most uses. It's always better to err on the side of get what you need + a little.

As far as cabs- I have a family of 4, so that pretty much sealed my fate. I've got 4 more years until my youngest is off to University, so a dclb is in my garage for a few years. I would have preferred an access cab, long bed manual tranny, but wife said "No" on the access cab and Toyota has really limited the availability of the manual tranny. That does piss me off- my Old Dodge was a 5 spd manual- gonna miss that.

The size of a dclb is of no issue to me. My prior truck was a Dodge 2500 quad can 8' bed diesel. The dclb is a midget car compared to a full sized truck..

The beauty of a Toyota is that if you don't like it, you're pretty much guaranteed to get top $ on a trade or resale. If for some reason I don't like my new Toyota, I'll simply get rid of it and buy what does suit my needs. No agony, no fuss, no muss.

Wait for a 2017, its not that far around the corner. Plus you may be able to work out better deals on "older" 2016s or 2015s you may find.

I hope all of the negative people would start scaring this poor fellow from the Tacoma's. He might get so afraid from what he is hearing that he may end up committing suicide and buying one of those plastics trucks from Chevy. What do you call those, Colorado's?

Any way, to answer your question. Both the 2015 and 2016 are great trucks! I can personally attest to that since I have had both, second and now a third generation. I have owned a 2006, 2007, 2013, and 2014 before buying my new 2016. I love the second generation and to some extent I really miss my 2014, I just loved the looks of the truck. The second generation is a very reliable and trustworthy truck.

As for the 2016, what can I say. I've had mine since November of last year and I love it! It has a bunch of cool features and it rides awesome! No problems with it whatsoever.

As for your trim, its really personal preference. I myself, love the looks of the double cab long bed, which is what I have.

Lastly, I hope that the second generation owners will stop attacking the third generations. Remember, we are all Tacoma brothers! I forgot to mention that I also have a first generation that I will never sell because she is my pride and joy. She does get a little jealous however when I drive my 2016 ;)

I don't know why the 2nd gen owners feel so superior, based on the amount of TSBs and recalls over the life cycle, they're driving shit boxes when compared to the first gen.

That literally means Toyota officially admits the 2nd gen is currently the most fucked up generation to date.

To the OP, just drive both like I did and decide which suits your needs better. For me, I was really considering a 2nd gen but after driving both quite a bit, I found myself happier with the 3rd gen.

From what I can tell Toyota is closing in on 100k 2016s sold. These threads are not representative of the overall satisfaction of 2016 owners.

Do the 16's have different rear stock leafs? I dont know all the ins and outs on the 16's

Love my 15 access cab, if you ever will need to haul kids or adults, more then 1, double cab will work best. I dont, so I chose access cab to get the 6' bed and not a trail limo DCLB. Had a 14 DCLB prerunner before the 15, the length definitely drives different, but you can get used to it.

I did upgrade my rear leafpack, cuz stock leafs suck with any amount of weight at all, allpro expo pack, rides great.

I was in the same boat as you OP. I bought a 2015 with 7500 miles as a CPO two weeks before the 2016s came out. To be fair, I am one of those who thinks the 2016 are ugly as sin, but I was also concerned with the potential first-year unknown (at the time) issues. I could not be happier with my decision.

Yeah, but you know the vast majority of people aren't car people. They wouldn't know a vibration isn't normal or a weird shift isn't normal etc

That's a big assumption to make. If you aren't a "car person" and your brand new truck shuddered every time you came to slow down or slipped shifts, I doubt it would be shrugged off as "normal".

Do you own a 16 as point of reference or are you just parroting what you read here?

Mine has neither vibrations or "weird" shifting and I've been driving trucks for a long time.

    Cruise works fine too.
