Yes! Yes! Yes. You sir are my hero. The 2016 Tacoma uses the Tundra style 7/4 pin plug in the bumper, so this will snap into our bumper. Slick. No need to solder as Hopkins sells a plug for the forward half of our new bumper receptacle. So after the 4 pin connector is cut off the T harness and wired to the new receptacle pigtail, we can now plug either a 7 pin or a 4 pin into our bumper and have trailer lights. Plugging in a 7 pin will not give you brakes though unless you use the unused wires to install a brake controller. This is the information I was hoping for. Thank you NEAScott. Did I get this correct?

Okay, so I did some research on the e-trailer website. If you go to part number HM40985 and down to Q&A, the tech answers a question about installing the factory style 7/4 pin bumper receptacle (PN HM40975) and the pigtail (HM40985) on a 2016 Tacoma, along with instructions and part recommendations for installing a brake controller. There is a video of them installing a flat 4 three wire to 2 wire converter. They basically show every wire. I may go this route rather than waiting for a plug and play because you have to tap into the reverse light wire anyway if you want reverse lights on your trailer. It's about $85 for everything to have a 7/4 plug in your bumper wired and ready to go. Add another $170 if you want the fancy P2 Prodigy brake controller wires and circuit breakers.

Saw this today. Kind of excited. I like the idea of using HM40975 with this curt like the schematic mentioned earlier. I don't think I'll need 7-pin to work anytime soon. So I was wondering if the 4-pin connection on the HM40975 would work if you only wired the needed connections for the 4-pin connection?

Where do you connect the Hopkins #33355? Etrailer website says it is a confirmed fit however it does not connect behind the tail lights.

Those converters aren't sealed very well. If you live in the north east expect to replace it in 2-3 years other place without the salt it'll last longer but they aren't water proof either

The install is appalling. No loom, a crimp connector on a power wire at the rear of the vehicle!

There must be a better option. How much is the genuine Toyota harness?

It's almost like they wanted to make it just hard enough that people would pay Toyota to include a tow package on their truck.

I would have happily forked over $650 for a tow package, but it is not available on 4 cylinder tacos.

That sounds almost like they wanted people to fork over at few more thousand for the v6, too.

I bet there are lots of people that spent thousands on higher trim levels for a single feature, and got dozens that they didn't need or want instead. I wanted dual zone ac... So that means I have a sunroof and heated seats that I didn't want. And a big hole in my pocket where my premium/tech money lived.

The Curt hitch is a pain in the neck to install. The captive plates and bolts and incredibly frustrating. Wasted 20 minutes trying to get one to work (yes tilting the plate etc.) and then gave up as it was too hot.

Someone needs to sell me a factory hitch and factory wiring. I don't care about the cost this aftermarket stuff is garbage.

I ended up scrapping those plates it came with and just tightening the bolts without them
