I've been developing a phone dock for myself after a good bit of aggravation with a suction style unit. It seems like it always decided to release itself at the most inopportune times. When these failures occurred my phone always ended up sitting in the center console tray. Realizing this, I set out to improve the situation. I decided to integrate the center console tray insert with a phone dock that would position the phone to be used easily with how my arm rested naturally (and safely in my opinion).

After countless prototypes I arrived at a design that I liked. I used it for a few months and would consistently get people asking about it whenever they found themselves inside the truck. That's when it hit me that maybe it would work for other people too.

I've started creating models for other phones and making myself look like a complete creeper running into Target countless times when test fitting samples to phones.

These are 3D printed from durable ABS plastic (same thing legos are made out of). You remove the existing tray insert and press this into place.

Pretty damn neat if i do say so myself.

I had a nite ize steelie magnetic mount but it kept falling (wearing) off my phone case...so i removed it from my console.

It'd be nice if you could make it so it expands and grips tight to different sized phones...and phones with cases

Depending on the price I'd consider running one. How secure is it when spiritedly driving, say, off-road? Pretty good work so far!

@AR15xAR10 Thanks for the compliment, and I like your idea for a universal unit. The biggest thing for me is making sure it works with just one hand vs needing two to dock/undock the phone. If others were interested in a universal one, I'd have fun pursuing one with a purpose.

@Maticuno Thanks! It's pretty damn snug in there too. I can remove it easily if I pull it out, but I haven't had any issues yet with it popping out from use. I've ridden some trails that knock the truck around violently enough and it hasn't budged. But - if you need to remove it for any reason lifting up on it releases it easily.

Make one that fits a Blackberry Priv at a reasonable price and I'd be in.

    Definitely a cool idea!
Really interested to see this develop for phone with case. I.e iPhone 5s with otter box or life proof, etc.
with measurements, could you make this for other vehicles too?

And with the taco, is there space left under in the old tray for a secret stash ( money, contraband, etc etc ) or does this go down the depth of the tray?

    Thanks

If I could get this for the iPhone 6s thatd be sick. Price depending

Itd be super sick if it would work with my LifeProof ;) Mine is never out of its case

@Maticuno I can definitely look into that!

@heffer I do -I have docks compatible with every Iphone (these were the first ones I modeled for after my motox)

@Berserker With measurements I could make them for other vehicles as well. What I like most about this design is it doesn't tie up a cup holder or the console tray. Common holders I've seen in center consoles fit into a cup holder making it unusable otherwise. Other vehicles would be dependent on what their console configuration is like but we could make it happen.

And stash spot is a cool idea - don't need all the depth of the tray so that would be cool to try out.

@4x4Taco09 I do have one for the 6s. It looks like people are interested in one compatible with cases so I'll need to get to work on that.

    Thanks for the feedback guys,
    Tim

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
So, I love the one I have now (ram mount on a birddog under radio mount), but this is a slick idea. However, maybe by incorporating a RAM style mounting ball to the unit, and letting the end user purchase their own mount for the phone through RAM, you may have a better overall product.

    Just an idea.

That was my first thought also. Make one as just a universal base plate mount. Where the user could add what mount he wants to it, like a RAM mount.

That is a great idea. Basically make a base mount that adapts to the RAM style phone holder....I should get the ball rolling on this one as the RAM style mount has been my favorite universal concept so far.

One thing I'd need to work out utilizing the RAM style setup would be charging cord management. With the open center channel on the current design you can dock/undock easily without any interference or manipulation of the charging cord (which is my favorite feature, so I'd like to maintain that). I will start working on this concept now though. I spend all day designing medical devices, and now I'll be spending more time at home after work designing these puppies (the fiance will love it haha).

I just ordered a couple of RAM mounts so I will play with them next week. Thanks again for the tip!

Damn, this is only for the autos #AllTransmissionsMatter

Jk great work OP! That really is a great idea. I like that you have model specific ones, and not universal ones. Like you said, makes it cleaner and easier to use with one hand.

Thanks @EatSleepTacos ! All transmissions do matter haha - just no tray with the manuals. I am all about the clean look/feel of no case (and my phone gets abused still), but realize not everyone is about that. If you do run no case, then as it stands this dock is a really nice setup.
