Spent a long time at the dealer yesterday after deciding to spring for a 2016 tacoma TRD sport.
After about 6 hours of the normal dealership bs, we were outside going over the truck for delivery. Popped the hood, look down at the engine, and the shiny stainless steel idler pulley was wobbling back and forth. Me, salesman and Manager stood there scratching our heads for a second, and then I told them to pull up another 2016 tacoma so we can compare.
Of course, the other trucks pulley was solid as a rock. Zero wobble.
Felt like I just got kicked in the stomach.
I was pretty upset about it (not at them, just in general) and I told then I really don't want a brand new, damn near $40k truck that has a pulley issue before it even leaves the dealership.
They promised they would look into it first thing today.
While waiting for a word from the service dept about what's going on, they told me they spoke with the GM and they are going to do something for me in terms of giving me a discount on the truck.

They just messaged me and said "nothing major at all, pulley was pressed in wrong, and just needs to be replaced."
Idk how I feel about that. I'm not sure how the pulley is fastened to the block, but I figured it's bolted in, and if it wobbling, my thoughts are that it was cross threaded at the factory.
Again, I do not want a brand new truck with issues right out of the box.
So... my question is, would you still take this truck post repair? Would you demand a different truck? What kind of discount would be acceptable for this problem?
How is the pulley attached? Is it pressed on, bolted on, and could mounted a pulley incorrectly or crooked create a bigger problem, like needing to re-tap the threads?

Any help and direction is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

See if you can finesse them out of a free service or warranty package for later on down the road, maybe? But if the problem is indeed 100% fixed before you pick the truck up I don't see what the problem is?

Is it going to be my very first brand new vehicle. Just something about it having any kind of issue that had to be repaired just makes me uncomfortable.
Talking to them about an extended warranty is a good idea though. Thanks for the advice and input much appreciated

Abandon that truck before delivery. It will never be like factory, especially after the goons get done with it.

Too much money to be throwing at a troubled truck right out the gate.

Yeah totally understand, if you're cashing out on a brand new ride there shouldn't be anything wrong. Is it a manual or auto?

That's pretty much been my initial feeling towards this whole thing. Not trying to be a dick about it, but this is definitely making me uncomfortable. I plan on having this truck 15 years plus, and I'm having a hard time being okay with it having to be repaired before even having it for one day

    Nope the f' outta there.

Too many tacos to choose from (auto sport is nothing special), new year coming up real soon (august) and too many with BS problems. You found one with BS problems before taking delivery....next.

While they're at it, I'd have them run a full diagnostic to check the transmission fluid level for safe measure as well then. Just so there's no guessing and you don't get Paranoid about your truck after browsing threads on TW about it lol

Yea, it just doesn't feel right taking a brand new repaired truck.
They told me they are gonna talk to the GM about getting me a different truck, which I feel is the right thing to do here, so hopefully they make good on that.
I love the truck, but I want a crispy new, factory, non pulley wobbling tacoma and start off on the right foot.

Seriously, the idler pulley is causing you to maybe back out? Wow... A $30 part that is easily changed and has no effect on the drive ability of the truck, people these days are getting way too picky and expecting way too much.

Unless you have the idler pulley confused with a wobbling crankshaft then you are being a bit ridiculous, the long term reliability of that truck is not compromised in anyway, shape or form. Shoot, you could probably change that out yourself in the driveway in a short period of time depending on where it is mounted, but let the dealer handle it and be on your way.

Repaired truck  You know how many are repaired before leaving the factory or after dealer delivery but before customer delivery?

Buy the truck and enjoy it, otherwise just be difficult and see how that pans out...

I'm not sure if you were able to understand from my op that I don't have a clue how critical this pulley is, how it's mounted, why it could be wobbling, if it's cross threaded. I'm not a mechanic, and don't know what something like this means.
I came here to ask for advice, and what this wobbly pulley means. So far the majority that replied said ditch the truck and find another.
I'm not trying to be picky, not trying to be a dick to the dealership, but car dealerships aren't exactly known for being honest.
Thanks for the input though. Much appreciated.

Can anybody tell me how this pulley is mounted, and if it could be cross threaded?

Its your hard earned money. If it were me I would hold out on another truck just on principle alone.I expect a little more when paying that kind of money for something.

The idler pulley is usually a simple pulley and bearing with some sort of mounting tab or bracket attached to bolt it to the engine. It is a simple bolt on part and most can be changed in about 10 minutes depending on where it is located. When they said it was pressed on wrong they probably meant the pulley was pressed onto the bearing a bit crooked, not cross threaded into the block or heads. This is a single non serviceable part. They will remove the old pulley assembly and replace it with a new one. This is not a big deal at all. It is a bolt on part and would not deter me from buying the truck as long as the dealer replaced it before delivery. I was a ASE Master Tech for almost 15 years (not for Toyota) and this issue would not bother me at all. As far as wanting a brand new truck never worked on. My truck went back to the dealer at 2k miles for a few minor issues so, this stuff does happen.

Have them check the trans fluid level, buy the truck and enjoy it. -Dan

Just a thought, we as consumers keep settling for less, that is what we will get.Its not a big deal but almost 40k is,at least to me.

Agree 100% but I still would use it to get a little something extra. Actually it is an opportunity to get something extra.

Very true but, he asked for opinion on if the issue was a big deal or not. If he wants to hold off for another truck for the principal of the matter that is his decision. However that does not ensure he will get another truck with zero issues.
