Radar Detector

I have been wanting to get a radar detector for my truck! Does anybody got one for sell or have any suggestions on a good one to get? I am wanting to just a get a cheap one for now and see how good it works!

I wouldn't go to cheap. I would look in the neighborhood of spending $175-$250 for a good one. Radar detectors do work & the technology is getting better every year. These things have been around a long time.

I had a cobra that I paid $100 for. It died on me after 3 years & I didn't know it. The lights still came on. I was driving with it for a month & noticed it wasn't working as I passed a cop that was shooting laser(lucky I wasn't speeding enough for him to come after me). I had one before that I paid $200 & it lasted forever. I had to upgrade because it was old technology and didn't cover all the bands.

 

Many view the Passport 8500 X50 and Valentine V1 to be the top 2. the X50 is a bit cheaper than the V1 I think...but it's still around $300. IMO I wouldn't buy one for like $100 then decide it isn't working well enough and buy a good one, I'd buy a good one from the start. I mean, if you speed it will pay itself off within 2 times it goes off.

 

I'm always told that if you get a radar detector, go for one that gives the direction the signal is coming from. IIRC, the only one that does that (so far) is the Valentine One (as mentioned above).

If you're only going to spend $35 on a detector when everyone else on here has said to spend no less than $175 or so, then why not just slow down and watch your speed? You're betting the cost of speeding tickets and points on something that costs less than the minimum ticket you'll ever get.

Just buck up and get a GOOD one as mentioned above, or learn to drive without one.

Personally, I do better without one. Just watching my speed, knowing where cops hide, blending with traffic, following a rabbit, etc. Just use common sense and save money on gas, a detector, tickets, and insurance.

Thanks. Not to mention, the cops don't see a detector sitting on my dash and know I'm intentionally trying to speed without getting caught. Probably more willing to let me slide on being a few over going down a hill or getting a running start for the next one.

That's why I fail to see the point in spending money on a detector unless you can also jam it. Sure, it probably helps in those areas (like where I grew up) where the cops ride around shooting radar all the time, but how much do they help with instant on? I suppose if they tag someone ahead of you then you might pick it up, but if the cop just lies in wait only tagging a few then you're done. Not to mention, if they wait for someone they KNOW is speeding just to get a number to put on the ticket then it doesn't help you either since they'll pull out, nail that person, then go back to hiding.

No one's reaction time is fast enough to slow down after getting tagged. And even if you are the cop will point out the skid marks you left on the road.

I find it easier to just cruise 5-10 over with traffic. On my commute to work I've tried speeding and just got held up with other traffic, school buses, 2 lower speed sections, red lights and stop signs. So all the people I passed were right behind me. So now I just cruise slower and even let the car coast in neutral on a couple hills to save gas since I'll need to slow down in a few hundred feet anyway.

And FWIW, I've had several speeding tickets before and all with radar detectors that never went off.

 

I have used the rabbit technique for years, just follow a good pace behind a speeding car. Now-a-days I am trying to save gas, cruising at 55 whenever possible.

The nice thing about the V1 is they make an addon that conceals the actual detector and there is a much smaller display that you can hide.
