I would be interesting in doing Red Cone this weekend. If that doesn't happen I'll run Yankee.

I don't see why both can't be done.

If you are interested in Red Cone on Saturday add your name to the list.

Might be too late but Mosquito isn't close to being opened all the way according to this.

7/3/16 - Still not open from Hwy 9 to the peak. We went up on the Leadville side and attempted to head down towards Hwy 9. The first drift on the east side of the peak took us 45 minutes to bust winching, digging and of course getting soaked in the snow. The next drift was about a 1/4 mile down. That was enough work, turned around and went back to Leadville. Trail is completely clear on the Leadville side.

Here are those same drifts two years ago 4th of July weekend, I suspect they would be about the same size.

true, @Lifeofbrian install your CB where you can access the back coax antenna input easily and it will take 5 min tops :D if you plan on installing it in your center console or somewhere that you can't have a small coax jumper cable in-between the CB and the antenna feed then it will take longer :D

i have the same CB as you and mounted in this location

Hi guys, I'll be camping near Red Feather Lakes next week and wanted to do some off roading. I have a stock 2012 TRD off road and my friend has a stock GMC Canyon (gonna remove his air damn). I was looking at going up bald mountain east to west. Then descending down Killpecker and check out Deadman lookout tower. I think that would be possible with our trucks but not boring. What trails would you recommend?

HA HA HA, i just hadn't installed it yet in that photo its directly center just under the AC controls now, and another hanging just above the passenger side on the A pillar. Had both of them reading around 35deg on multiple occasions in moab.

I will defer to @BDN because he's much more familiar with the trails up there and is apparently headed up this weekend and will have current conditions.

But I can tell you my experience. The exit to Deadman from the west end of Bald was kind of tight, or was when I was up there. It's short, but I remember thinking it could be tough for a full-size. You also want to make sure you know where it is and don't end up continuing down Green Ridge.

We drove in that end to see the end mud hole on Green Ridge, and then decided we'd try heading up Bald west to east. Two pretty significant puddles later we came to a short rocky hill. I don't have a locker, just an LSD. I got out to look and pick a line, but it was getting kind of late in the day. A non-built first gen came up behind us and attempted it, but without a locker he had to mostly skinny his way up and got stuck on some of the rocks a few times. He lost his passenger turn signal and got a bit of body/bumper damage when he ended up tagging a tree on the edge (it's a pretty tight trail in some areas and it wasn't the first time people had hit that tree either).

At that point I said nope, not worth it (two year old truck at that point, stock except tires), and it's getting pretty dark anyway. Turned around and out the way we came. Later ran into the guy in the first gen in town, said he'd gone a little farther and found another puddle that he wasn't comfortable with being solo, so he also turned around and exited. I've never tried it from the east end.

Long story short, expect mud and puddles (it's not part of the 'Mud Loop' for nothing), especially this early in the year, and be prepared for potential damage is my take.

Bald Mtn is deceiving. It's pretty easy on the ends, but the middle section is rough. Stock can run the trail, be prepared for lots of bottoming out. I saw a stock Jeep Liberty run it and the bumper had to be ziptied on to finish the trail and the under side was beat pretty bad. They do sit lower than a Tacoma though. Mild potential for body damage if not careful in choosing a line. No cliffs or off camber stuff, just lots of rocks and downed trees. First time I drove the trail in a 1967 Scout 800, I bent the tie rod in a U shape and the tires were pointing at each other. Should give you an idea. There will be mud.

Killpecker...hope you have a map. Lots of spur roads, some just loop back on them selves. The trail has also become overgrown with pine trees in recent years so pinstriping is a possibility. Other than that it's fairly tame. More mud/puddles.

Fire tower/Deadman lookout tower, this is a must do. Simply a pretty drive on a maintained road. You can hike to the top of the tower and go inside. Be sure and sign the guest book. Bring Binoculars.

If you want to do some scenic driving, skip Bald and Killpecker, run to the fire tower and do that thing, then get back on Deadman and head on up the road. There are several spurs to explore and there is also Sand Creek trail, might see some mooses. The road will end at CR 80C after you go over the pass. You can come back thru Laramie River or thru Cherokee Park. Or go back the way you came to Redfeather.
Can easily spend 3-4 days running trails in that area.

@Soccerties Sand Creek is the other one I was thinking of but haven't done. Someone stock ran that in the last few months I think, check the TR, Upcoming Events, or BS thread here. Just search on Deadman and you should find it. I know they were asking about Deadman and Sand Creek and went by themselves or with a friend not on there.

If you want an actual 4x4 trail that's still pretty easy, and assuming it's open, Sevenmile is probably your best bet in the vicinity of Red Feather. It's the first segment of the Mud Loop (Bald being the middle and Green Ridge being the end). CR69 / Manhattan Rd down to Rustic almost, then back up Sevenmile towards Red Feather. You will again want a map, because while the Rustic end of it is easy to find, once you get to the 'top' and the big open parking lot (obvious if you see it), finding your way out can be confusing. Far less mud than the other two, mostly just forest road but has a couple of creek crossings and rocky sections and hills.

Thanks for the info guys. I think Bald Mountain would be too much for this trip. Definitely would like to try it it sometime though.

I think we'll do the Deadman Lookout and head up Sand Creek. There will be some other stock SUVs in the group so they could join us. This post was helpful:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/sand-creek-road-deadman-road-good-for-beginners.392905/

And if we have time, for those that want something a little more adventurous we'll do Sevenmile too.
