Update: just spoke to the assistant service manger and he apologized that I was not explained what exactly had happened. Evedentally my differential falls under the TSB 0057-13, rear differsntial whine noise at 50-60 mph, although mine was most noisy at 30-45 mph. I was assured that the new differential carrier assembly is a bit different, more heavy duty, also different part #, than the original. Toyota has known about this for some time but will not issue a recall due to not all will have an issue. Personally I still feel someone screwed up and I told him that it was a huge coincidence that the day after it was serviced it needs replaced and he agreed it would be hard for him to accept it if the shoes were on different feet, however did assure me I am not the ony one out there that this has happened to. I guess I am just glad its getting done at no cost to me.

    You forgot the "/rant" tag.

For a web grammar nazi you sure did miss that one! You can't just begin ranting without the tag.

As for diffs. I put ECGS diffs front and rear on my truck with ARB Lockers & 4.56 gears. I've noticed that, presumably the front diff, makes a winding noise that is speed based. I took it to the local custom shop and called ECGS. Both think it's just simply because of the re-gear and the new thicker gears making more noise than the original ones. So far as I can tell you can't hear it from outside of the truck. You just hear it in the cab.

I've put a couple thousand miles on it and it still does it. The truck runs just fine too!

My thoughts exactly. Too much of a coincidence that it just happened to take a crap right after a service.

But good luck getting them to admit it. The best part is you don't have to pay. :)

2800 lbs isn't much weight, but 7000 miles a year is a lot of towing. I've read of rear axles going bad on these from guys who tow a lot. But usually after more than 60,000 miles. The version with the locking rear axle seems to fail sooner. Supposedly not as heavy duty.

I'd have to agree with this. The fact that the dealer is so quick to change the diff sounds like they know they're the ones that screwed it up.

Driver's side wheel hub on my 2006 Silverado went out at about 20k. Had 3 other guys at work with the same year pickup/Avalanche do the same thing, driver's side.

You were probably just looking to upgrade to a 4 runner and ungreased the bearing and unlube the diff. o_Oo_O

Wow, that's a weird service bulletin. It applies to open differential, but is restricted to when paired with **5 speed automatic**. Yet the same part also applies to vehicles equipped with 4-speed automatic, 5-speed manual, and 6-speed manual.

Update: Just got my truck back this morning, noise is gone at least for now, feels like the first day I drove it off the lot again. I was informed no towing for the first 500 miles and must retrun in 1000 miles to have the fluid changed and everything checked.
