You are going to want to be in the NMW or somewhere in Western Maine for those type of sites. There are a lot of great areas, pick up a delorme map and look for the little camp site logo. The ones that are not filled in are the primitive sites. If you message me though I am getting another ride/trip going in August and you are welcome to join. Last year I set up a pretty large trip up to the abandoned steam engines, and another to the b52 crash. Both were 3 day loop trips. Never down the same road twice. Acadia is just a tourist trap now so I would avoid if you are looking something more off the grid.

I know I am making a double post but I wanted to separate things here. Anyone planning to head up towards the Jackman are should be aware that most roads off the Spencer road are closed until further notice. This includes many of the ATV trails. The one from the West Forks to Jackman is closed until further notice (I can update you guys when its back open again). As far as roads off the Spencer Road the following are closed: NO Road, Grace Pond Road, 10 Mile Road, and the Old Spencer Road. There are also many unnamed roads that are closed and many we do not even know about yet. Please do not try to drive down them even if it looks like you may be able to make it with your truck. You will make it harder for us to repair them and the ground is extremely unstable right now.

Not sure if you guys have seen pictures but here are some that I took from my road when I went up to inspect the damage. This all happened in 5 hours when we got 8" of rain. Estimated 3000 yards of gravel needed to make our road passable again. Well over a million in damage on these 3 roads, this doesn't include the other roads that are not part of our associations.

We would love to, but damages are well over a million from what we are seeing now. We still haven't seen the full extent. Thats a lot of money for every day people to come up with.

That's a lot of money for anyone to come up with. Good luck, I hope it doesn't get worse before it gets better.

We currently have a guy on one of the roads knocking down parts of the road to fill in holes and make it passable to some extent. We would still like to ask everyone to please stay off them til they can be completely repaired. We are taking some state officials up tomorrow to look at the roads. These roads provide extremely important fire and rescue access to a large area of land on that side of the mountain not accessible any other way

Do you have to get any permission to drive in the north woods? Also wondering if anyone who has been up there can plot on a map where the roads they traveled on are. Lived in Maine my whole life and have only been to Greenville area once and never above that. I need to go explore haha

You just have to go through the gate and pay a toll basically. I go up there all the time.

I'm fairly local to you as well, right across the river in Augusta, but in Gardiner every day.

Grab a delorme gazeteer for Maine and you'll be good to go explore to your heart's content.

I have done that up in the Byron area. I used to go on camping trips to Mount Blue State Park every year growing up and have spent a lot of time on Tumbled own and in the Coos Canyon area. I do some recreational gold panning when I can. Anyway, in the gazeteer it shows many back roads up there, but most were gated.

I did wind up driving the Ellis Pond rd/Byron rd into Roxbury, then 120 into Andover, and Andover rd to 26 down through Grafton Notch. Beautiful drive and I did see lots of dirt roads I'd like to explore. Didn't get many pictures or go up many roads as it was a rather last minute and hasty trip. Have to make it a weekend trip at some point.

One of the things the Wardens do is work with delorme to update which roads are gated and which aren't. Granted they only get updated once a year

If you get into the Forks area at all there's a TON of logging roads, and most of them aren't gated, at least not during the summer. Made many trips between the Forks and Moosehead on dirt roads back when I was in high school, in my old 2wd Nissan Pickup. Never blew a tire, either, which was pretty lucky/amazing...

If you want to wait a couple weeks for me to clear up some of the work I have, get my lift on (this weekend), get my tires on, and get my sleeping platform welded up I can take you up to a lot of those areas. Most of western Maine towards Coburn Gore is gated, and its gated all the time. Land owners and lease owners have keys, and the logging companies. Once you get to The Forks and Jackman thats all open, the NMW is all gated but can be accessed via a paid checkpoint

No, thats Performance Paint and Powder. There should be no one else in the state with this name, if there is I'll be having a problem with it. I really don't want people to associate myself and my shop with someone else of unknown quality.
