I was extremely sceptical when I first heard about it ... until I saw that History channel video

My cousin is married to a long retired F4 driver who once said to me.."it's better to be down here wishing you were up there than to be up there wishing you were down here". Now I get it..

...^^^... NumNutz is the carrier pilot who originally posted it. That pilot, who broke the wire, was purely instinctive (and muscle memory) in the reactions (i.e. like your arms going out when you fall) with no time to think, just react.

Thanks NumNutz... I always thought the cable had snapped. I know they change the cables after a certain amount of traps but I don't know how many traps that would be. Trying to catch the 3rd cable must have been 50% luck.

I believe it's 125 traps. As a first time qual, which is what the guys in the E2 and the A6 were doing (well it's their second time at the boat because you go in your training aircraft, but I digress) you're just trying to keep the "meatball" (yellow light) on the happy side of the datums (the string of green lights). You can google IFLOLS to understand how it works. An FNG (fucking new guy) is going to be happy with a 3 or a 4 wire (newer boats are 3 wire boats).

I thought Sully's landing on the Hudson was incredible but that Israeli F-15 landing with one wing was an absolute miracle. I went to Israel 36 years ago and came home convinced that Israeli pilots were the best in the world. My impression has only been enhanced by that video.

Never seen an APU in person before. Here is one out of a Challenger 600. Smaller than I was expecting

And here's a picture of my bird at lunch. We had to divert for weather on our way back into Dallas and now dad wants a faster plane. Lol

The technology behind the A-10 is 1970s. They will most likely conduct their study and realize that the best replacement for the A-10 is another A-10 built from scratch with modern materials and avionics.
