Rear drum rusty area. FYI

Just an FYI; at your next service, ask your SA to note this annoying rust area on the rear drum. If it spreads, Toyota should fix it. Both sides are showing.

I passed by my dealer today and my SA said shes aware of it.

It's not a big deal but at 800 miles, it's a bit early imop.

 

Normal. It's bare metal. I painted my drums, leafs, exhaust, etc. a long time ago.

Take your wheels off, get some Rustoleum Rust Reformer and paint those drums before they get even more rust on them.

I'm not sure. I just wanted it noted as this model is still quite recent and I haven't had a car with drums for a while.

I might also add that because the drums are iron and the wheels are aluminum, the two dissimilar metals will react and corrode. This can get so bad that they fuse together and make it difficult to remove the wheels from the drums.

You might also want to coat the face of the rim that contacts the drum with a light coating of paint or some sort of protectant.

Very true, I used to have aluminum wheels before I got steel wheels....they "stuck" to the back quite a bit even at low mileage....not a hard fight, but you could tell it was giving me resistance.

 

All drum brakes that have a bare metal spot will look like this, completely normal

 

They'll get stuck to the rotors on the front too. A few months ago one of my neighbors was trying to change the front tire on his Nissan Titan and he couldn't get the wheel off. He had to kick the wheel several times before it broke loose, all while the truck was sitting on one scissor jack.

I'd rather have the wheels come off easily and not have to kick the truck off of the jack and have it fall onto my legs.

 

Or in case snap one the two dozen wires going to all those lights

 

Loosen the lugs a bit (not so much that you damage the threads at the next step) before you put it on the jack, then pull forward a couple feet and smack the brakes. Works every time, I do this on my fleet all the time when I rotate the tires (or make my son rotate them; he is stronger than me).

 

Wash your truck or let it sit out in the rain overnight. Note the rust on your front rotors the next AM. Report that too.

It's a chunk of cast iron. It will last longer than you or I. They aren't gonna do squat about the rust.

The great news is your SA got a new item for her list of 'guess what a customer asked today?' for lunchtime chatter.

I typically wash in the late afternoon, and see the rust the next AM, so that was first thing that came to mind.

Just needs to sit a while to allow the rust to form.

Get some of this stuff http://www.por15.com/POR-15_Rust_Preventive_Coating and gussy them up. You can use it on the un-swept portion of your rotors as well.

 

Can I just coat all the brake parts in oil or light grease? Would that stop the rust too?

 

Not a good idea for 2 reasons. First off you don't want t take the chance of getting oil on the braking surfaces. That would reduce the trucks abilityto stop. Second is, do you have any idea how hot the brakes can get? If you put grease or oil on the drum, rotors or other parts you will eventually have a cloud of smoke coming out of your wheel wells as the oil or grease burns off. Trust me on that one. I have seen it happen. Use a good anti size compound if you want to use something.

 

This works... My wife purchased a 2006 Corolla in 2012 that had seen 6 yrs of only driving to Church...very low mileage.... never a tire rotation..!!

I went to rotate them and could not budge them. even pounded the tires with an 8lb sledge hammer to no avail.... Went online... some guy said to try this method...I did...NO GO...

So, I sprayed penetrating oil like it was free...let sit over nite and then this method worked...I heard a distinct "crack" as each one broke loose...(I did 1 at a time)...

Sorry man. I was just goofing. I needed an emoji in there I guess. I actually had a customer try this. Said rotors rust and then it made grinding noises when he'd first drive. The oil did indeed smoke.
