so ive searched and searched although my internet skills suck i cant find really anything other than personal opinions on the topic. So let me tell you the direction im going to go then what i have in mind and you guys can fire away. I plan on getting a 4 wheel pop up camper, full armor (aluminum) front and rear bumers, then slider that will be steal. I want to get the truck regeared and put front and rear lockers since im going to be opening the diffs. The reason i want to regear is this is not my daily driver and i would like it to handle the weight of armor and camper while hauling and offroad. I would love to know the experience with gearing and lockers also brands etc. Im leaning towards arb air lockers beacuse i want to have an onboard air compressor fro tires and tools. What i have read is you cant replace the e locker with trd's with air? My truck is a 2007 4x4 trd i have full fox shocks and all pro expo pack. please give me all ideas hatred etc of what i have planned, i really want to do this right!

The TRD OR Ring gear is an 8.0", the SR5 is a 8.4". Makes sense for ARB to make a locker for the 8.4" since the trucks didn't have one. Doesn't make much sense to make one for the 8.0" when all the trucks already have selectable lockers. Just add the ARB to the front.

so i called east coast gear supply and talk to travis. gave him the story on the route i wanna go and he recommended 488 gears.also they do a third member swap, I saw the write up on the rear third but is there one on the fron diff? also does anyone have any experience with the 488 or 456 gears? pros and cons thanks for the info!

Boost, armor, lights, big tires, no savings.
I think tire size will play the biggest factor. There is a thread for guys running 35's and all their experiences with what goes along with that. Auto and 35s = 4.88, MT = 4.56. And for searching just use something other than the TW search function. Google will do it better.

Not sure if it's my lack of experience with computers or what but I can't seem to use the search function maybe it's my iPhone. I will be running 33 inch tires and they are bfg ko2

If you have the 4.0 manual like me and are going to run 33s, I would seriously consider 4.10 gears if you daily drive it much. You could do 4.56 and drive around over geared (it would be really fun!), but would kill gas mileage. The manual trans is geared lower than the auto. Both have 3.73 diff gears in the stock configuration. the 8 vs. 8.4" rear thing isn't actually true. All Tacos have a 8" rear, the non Offroad models have stronger supports for the gears (e locker makes the rear weaker), so Toyota deceivingly calls it an 8.4". It's confusing, but good to know.

I've been running 33s for about a year now on stock gears in my manual. It's a little bit of a dog, but not bad - I do get good gas mileage though, even though my truck is heavily weighted all the time and I tow. When I finally pony up for lockers, there's no doubt that I'll go 4.10. If I ever end up going to 35s, I'll be back to about the same gear ratio I'm running now. FYI 4.10 on true 33" tires is geared just slightly lower than the stock gear and tire combo from the factory.

I have similar results with a manual and 33's. But towing is a DOG since I got the 33's. It's not too bad around town, but towing a trailer through the CO Rockies is pretty slow.

I was under the impression that my truck has 410 gears stock from the factory. That's what Travis from east coast gear supply told me, I'm not worried about it being tough driving around town since I don't use it as a daily driver it's my camping off-road occasional around town vehicle I was not sure if you read the whole thread but I'm building it To put a four wheel camper on it. I have been running my suspension lift and 33 inch tires for about seven years now and it doesn't bug me one bit actually has some get up and go does great off-road but when iPhone put in a full load of camping gear in it kind of bogged down I want compensation for that since the camper will be heavier than my gear

    Same experience here in Montana

If you have the 4.0 liter V6 engine with 6 speed manual transmission, you have 3.73 gears. If you have the 2.7, 5 speed, you have 4.10 gears.

@deeezy ran 4.56 on his manual with 33s for a bit before he jumped to 35s. He said it was super sporty fun, but high RPM at highway speeds - not a huge problem for those island kids.

Any idea how high the rpms? I plan on doing long road trips so kinda curious. Any down side to high rpms? Extra wear on engine etc?
