255/85 R16 Owners Experience

all right a little info here from the wheel guru's would be appreciated. i'm considering these tires my problem is i have 17x9 aftermarket wheels already on my truck with 285/70/17's on them. was thinking the 255/80's but it says a 8.5" wide wheel at max. can they be put on these wheels or do i need to either pick a different size or sell my wheels and either use my ugly assed steel stock wheels or something else maybe a trd aluminum wheel will be needing tires in a little while so i'm trying to figure this delima out

 

255s would be pretty stretched on a 9" wide wheel. Mine are hard enough to bead on my 7.5" TRD wheels, I couldn't imagine something wider. I think a 7" wide wheel would be about perfect for these. I'd much rather put a wider tire on a narrower wheel versus a narrower tire on a wider wheel. My biggest reason for that is because when I air down I don't want to risk blowing a bead and then have to re-bead a tire that's a pain in the ass.

 

thanks that's good info maybe if i'm going to run these tires i'm just going to have to find different wheels this gets very frustrating

Careful with the Toyo's in this size Chris. I believe @Crom likes his 255-85 R16 Toyo's, but he mentioned that they are about a half inch taller than most other 255's and he had to do several things to make them work.

 

Still really happy with the tire size, only issue is I wish they made more options so you could choose a lighter one. The MTs and maxx's are just a little too heavy for my 2.7 while towing

Hey all - Here's a little more data for the world, as I just mounted up BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM2's in this size:

Truck:

• 2006 Tacoma Access Cab w/ v6, Automatic Transmission
• No diff-drop (yet)

Suspension:

• Front: Bilstein 5100 at lowest lift position, ARB Light Load coil springs. (before new tires this was 33.5" ground-to-weelarch)
• Rear: Bilstein 5100, stock leafs.
• Truck is level as set up.

Wheels:
Mickey Thompson Classic III 16 x 8 0 offset, 4.5" backspacing.

Results:

• Both sides in the front rub the front little bump in at the base of the wheel well shroud at about 90% of full lock. When I get a bumper, they'll be gone, so no big deal.
• Left side is just kissing the inner-most rear edge of the fender flare, down at the bottom, and i think at some amount of compression - maybe 50%. This isn't happening on the right side.
• Going straight a big compression causes something to hit that's loud. Looking around I can't see any contact marks on anything metal, so I'm guessing it's the left side.
• No contact with the frame or chassis that i can tell under normal driving.
• Did some mild off-roading this weekend but got the truck pretty flexed out and nothing else rubbed.
• I plan to take the coil-over out and run the suspension through it's travel and see if i notice any other contact.
• no contact on the rear, at all - and i've had it flexed to the bump-stop. (only about .75" clearance though!)

I think the 1.5" or so extra wheel (wider than stock by .5 plus the +30 to offset from stock) is probably contributing to the front rubbing both front wheel shrouds, but the left front rubbing the rear of the wheel arch i'm guessing is from some difference in the camber adjustment since it's only happening on one side.

I sure like the way these look!

Here's my truck with 255 85 r16 Cooper STMAXX's. They look much beefier in person. Happy with the tire selection. Suspension setup is Icon Stage 3 with Dakar springs. Semi-happy with that... once I can get some vibes figured out.

 

Looks good!!!! any rubbing ? how much of a lift do you have ??

 

Want the same tires just don't want it to rub.... have the 6112 set on the highest level and 2'' blocks in the back

 

You won't rub if you use stock OR wheels. Even without a lift.

What wheels are you planning to use? From what I remember stock OR wheels and gen 1 16" rims with a 4.75 back spacing don't rub. 16 x 8 with a 4.5 back spacing is where you need to start cutting. Same goes for stock wheels with 1.25 spacers. Suspension lift doesn't change where the stops are in relation to the truck body so lift doesn't change clearance when you take full travel into account. FWIW I have stock OR wheels, 1.5 inch lift in the rear and 2.5 lift in the front. I don't rub at all, even at full articulation. I can also keep my front flaps for daily driving.

 

Who out there has a steel bumper? I'm thinking of getting one but want to see what it'll look like with the 255's

 

(leaning towards an ARB).. maybe not the most stylized, but I feel that it has the most rugged look.

 

White truck is 255/85r16 and blue is 285/75r16.
