I like the look of the 2012 and they appear similar. Mine is single CD non JBL nor is the 2012.
I like that it plays mp3 CDs and it has AUX.

Does anyone know if it cab be done?

It can be done and I have done it...however I'm not happy with it at all and I wish I'd spent the money on a decent aftermarket unit. There are how to's on the site with parts required if you want to do it though. Forgot to mention that I switched to a 2013 touchscreen unit with Bluetooth etc...

Go with the 2013 and up with touch screen. I did that on my '12 and it worked out well and was cheap. That being said I can sell you my '12 if you like.

I found a 2009 6 cd mp3 changer with AUX for $48. I waiting for delivery. I'll post here how it goes.
But really liked the 2012 look. I would like to also change the instrument panel lights from red to white or blue. Red hurts my eyes.

So you put a 2013 unit on what model Tacoma? 2007? Did you modify anything? Was it plug and play like?

I started looking to modify my unit so I can play my Ipod and then I read here that some units can be interchanged. That is when I saw the 2012 and liked it. I went on ebay and found a 2009 one for $48 that looks pretty much like the one I have now but will need a harness to do AUX.
Are you sure the 2013 with touchscreen fits the 2007? I want to keep it original stock as much as I can. For now I waiting for the 2009 to arrive and try it.
I'll see how it goes. I'll let you know if I want to try the 2012 you have.
