Anyone Retrofit Wireless Charging into their 2nd gen?

Just took this picture to give a better idea of how I made a wireless charger for my Tacoma. The forstner bit pictured is to small for this size hole but with this type of bit the holes can overlap each other to remove more material. I cut a grove using a table saw for the charging cable. I also used a small forstner bit to remove material for the plug on the cable end and as a notch for the electronics to fit into on the opposite side of the hole . Then used a chisel to square up rounded areas created by the drill bit.

This picture was for an extra wireless charging stand for inside the house but process is very similar. I inlaid some ebony in maple then sliced a thin piece off as the top. Then glued it back in place after the electronics was inside.

I only mention the inlay because some ebony is missing on the inside piece and might seem strange. Also the grove on the end is so the charging cable gets embedded inside a second piece of wood which gets glued to the piece pictured creating a base so it can stand upright. Again the process was very similar to the wireless charger for my Tacoma.

As I mentioned in my previous post this can be done by drilling though the bottom of a piece of wood being careful not to drill all the way though and remove enough material for the electronics to fit into.

Decided to cut the ribs off and smooth it out for a nice flush mounting area along with epoxy. A very thin layer was applied on top, with most of the holding around the edges.
Still haven't had time to wire it up, but its looking like I may have to run a line to an add-a-fuse (or tap into the cigarette lighter), so power is automatically on when the truck is.

 

I am doing this as well. I'm am epoxying it under as well but I don't know the best/cleanest/ most efficient way to wire this up?!? Please help!

 

if you have a trd with the inverter under there you can tap the wire in for a constant 12v to the charger.

 

I gave it a lot of thought and came to the conclusion that wireless is too slow and I'm usually in my car 20-30 mins at a time... Max. A "quick charge 3.0" car charger has worked out great for my needs. You gotta have a compatible phone though. Chances are if your phone has wireless charging, it also has Quick Charge capabilities

 

Waiting for the epoxy to dry, should have this done this weekend

 

Are you guys using covers on your phones? samsung has a quick charging wireless unit (pricey) that I was wanting to use, but between the Otterbox and the console, I'm wondering if it would even register?

 

I have a cover on mine and it works like a charm. Just finished it up today... Its awesome!

 

Just to provide an update, I eventually ended up tapping into an add-a-circuit I put in the fuse box to provide a trigger to my driving light relay. It may be slower than plugging in, but I like the ease of access. With a antislip pad on the console, and a silicone case I haven't had it slide at all. The other benefit is the wife can use the USB to charge her phone now.

As for tapping into the inverter, it looks like on my 2013, the violet wire going into the inverter box might have a constant 12v source from the 7.5A fuse labeled STA, if I'm reading the wiring diagram correctly.

 

I think there is a very good chance it will not work with an Otterbox case. I made a wood charging stand for a friend that has a Galaxy S6 and it did not work with his Otterbox. The fix was putting an aftermarket charging receiver between the layers of his Otterbox case.
If you often connect your device to a computer a thinner case might be a better solution as it's a bit of a hassle plugging and unplugging a wireless receiver, assuming your device supports wireless changing. My friend never needs to unplug the receiver so he's very happy with this work around as he loves the wooden charging stand.

I'll look into that. It never leaves it's case and it connects to everything in the house wirelessly anyways. Is that receiver just a small spool of wire like the qi charging pad pretty much? Seems like that would fit between the phone and case if it's as thin as it looks

 

Your description is very accurate, wireless receivers are very thin and should fit in just about any case. With an Otterbox I suggest placing the receiver between the layers of the case rather than between the device and the case. This is what I did with my friends Galaxy S6 and it working great. His S6 supports wireless charging but it wasn't charging with his Otterbox as it's pretty thick. You shouldn't have any problem using WiFi.

Been running it for a few years now.
I cut apart a Samsung charger I had laying around.
Used a dash cam wiring kit to run power to it
And some black abs plastic to make a plate
And lot of hot glue.
