That's what I'm thinking too, just gonna add a bunch of gussets to all my miter cut corners over the tongue area.

Sounds prudent, I've seen many that weld a plate on for additional storage and strength.

Need to grab my drill and drill bits from my work truck and snag some grade 8 hardware then I can get started on mounting the suspension.

Got some 5/8"x4" grade 8 bolts and hardware. Mounted up the timbrens, minus the spindles, brakes, and other stuff.

I can already see I'm gonna need to put a piece of angle on the frame to give the timbrens a second mounting place, and also to distribute the pressure the new bolts are putting on the inside rail. Either way I'm getting somewhere with it so I'm happy.

Ran into my first road block today....
The mounting plate on the spindle of the timbrens has a 5 stud pattern. My Brakes have a 4 stud pattern. Checking on Etrailer.com I cannot find any 3500lb ones with a 5 pattern. Now on top of that the bearing kits that were sent with it will not fit on the spindle. :annoyed:

You'll need to exchange them for 12" brake assemblies and 12" brake drums.

Hmm... The 12" are rated around 6000lbs. Is that gonna be too much brake for such a small trailer? Am I gonna have it locking up on me, even with a controller cranked down?

I'm starting to think I should try to sell these timbrens and get the 2000 lb ones. There's more options for these things now then there was when I bought them. Another option would be to get replacement spindles for the right rating, and see if I can replace the rubber to the right rating as well. I cannot find anything on dismantling the rubber though.

Definitely exchange for the 2000 lb units, the hubs and brakes you have will fit, give you a 4000 lb capacity and a much better ride. I'm guessing your rig will not weigh more than 2500 lbs when finished.

Steve, after looking at the E trailer description on the axles you have and comparing them to the rest of what they have to offer, you have the right ones. They have a 3500 lb capacity as a pair.
Have you looked at the brake system Turtleback is using on theirs for a comparison? I think they use a disc brake set up

Yes when all is said and done it should be under 2500lbs loaded.

I have not looked at their brake system. I'll take a look then. I'm just confused as to why they would rate these to 3500lbs and then put a 5 stud pattern on it for brakes rated to 6000lbs. Thanks for the responses by the way, I appreciate it.

i don't think the brakes are weight rated. I believe they are using the weight capacity to describe what axles they will fit.

You should be able to turn the gain down on your brake controller. FWIW I've got a trailer at work that you can turn it down to .5 gain and you don't even feel them engage.

Okay if that's true that would make me feel a little more comfortable getting the 12's and sticking with the axles I got.

Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. I don't have a brake controller for the truck yet, but when this is all done I'll get one.

also, with a 12" brake and drum you can use the same spare wheel/tire combo for the trailer and the truck.
