I read on another website that the Tacoma's front differential is "locked" when the 4WD is engaged. Is this accurate? If so, I assume that is for both 4Hi and 4Lo. ??
That's nice to have, but I didn't expect it. Part of the reason I wanted a TRD Off Road was so I could have the option of locking the rear diff, which, I'm told, will rarely be necessary.

No there is no locker in the front diff. The off roading diodes has a locker in the rear and locks when you press the lock button.

Okay. I think the writer should have said the front differential will "engage" when in 4WD instead of saying the front diff locks-which is mis-leading.

Is the front diff limited slip or just use the Traction Control for wheel spin?

It depends what year, but I believe first few years have "Trac", then after that is "A-trac". Not 100%, but I believe they are similar in that, yes, they are controlled by the computer, sensing wheel spin and activating the individual brake to give power to the wheel with traction. Definitely not as good as a front locker, but with the rear locker and A-trac on it does work fairly well.

05-08 had nothing front wise. In 09 they added some computer controlled stuff that modulates the brakes as said above.
