What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Swapping the 3rd and clamshell is fairly straightforward. Nothing complicated that I recall, and only tool I didn't have was an external torx for the ADD tube. It's an E14.

If you get an ARB in the front you won't have to worry about the ECGS bushing. But if not, its the perfect time to swap one in.

Only other thing I would add is that I would strongly recommend against 4.88s for 35s. Just get 5.29s. I have 4.88s and running 295/75r16 and its perfect, especially given our elevation.

 

I have a cheap, yet super effective, USB charger I put in one of the aux 12v outlets in my truck. But it had an annoyingly bright white light that I hated. So I always stored the charger in the center console. I wanted to keep it plugged in permanently for convenience sake so I painted the white light with some Sunfire Red Pearl touch up paint.

I used a toothpick as an applicator because I wanted to see if it would still glow red... but alas, it's too thick. But it's much better now

Are you running an auto or manual? I've been struggling with the ratio question for a while now. I'm not overly concerned about higher RPMs at freeway speeds, since it isn't my daily. And like you said, at our elevation and seeing the kind of grades we see, a little more engine speed isn't a bad thing.

I am planning on just biting the bullet and doing the ARB since that would be the perfect time. Good to know I don't need to worry about the bushing then. Why is that, just for my own info?

I've got a 5 speed. RPMs on the highway are fairly high, but not too bad. These engines don't mind the revs and I drive interstate so little it a non-issue for me.

The ECGS bushing replaces the factory needle bearing in the drivers side of the diff carrier. ARB locker is a whole new carrier that has much tighter tolerances on the CV. Similar to that of the ECGS bushing.

 

Dude, thanks again for the info! I think I'll go ahead with the 5.29s. I want to get moving on the clamshell/3rd here pretty quick. Have you heard of any issues with ECGS assemblies?

 

I've heard nothing but good things about ECGS.

I myself had a local CO member who also happens to be a Toyota tech build the diffs. Don't know how busy he is, but another option to consider.

 

I had an ecgs complete that a friend put an ARB in for me. It was great, I also agree with Brett, 5.29s with 35s was the way to go. Don't waste time on 4.88

 

Thanks, fellas! I'm gonna go ahead and pull the trigger on the 5.29s from ECGS. Maybe they'll get here by the time I'm done cutting and welding sheet metal for the 35s!

So what are the ideal alignment numbers with aftermarket UCA? I'm trying to do my own alignment.

0 camber
2 caster
0 toe

Sound right?

 

I like some negative camber. Feels good in the corners and helps with adding caster. Might cause slight tire wear.

As much caster as possible.

A touch of toe out or 0. RWD vehicles tend to push the front tires toe in slightly.

 

Well it's not quite what I did to my Tacoma, but I got new boots. RIP pedal work. Especially heel-toeing

 

T case is supposed to make extra noise in low range because of the reduction gearing.

Slickrock didn't like my new skids


Centered smacked on a rock and turned that 3/16 into a taco ripped the two rear bolts straight out. 3 front bolts held tight so I still drove it home lol

The back is two shelves (that I found on the street). You could use 1/2 or 3/4" ply

The base has two 2x2 posts that connect the back board to a wine box that happened to fit behind my seat (I'm 6' 0")

I may end up building a different box cause I might want to scoot the seat back a notch !

 

If it's not your dd. Go 5.29s. Trust me. It's worth it.
