Frame rust recall

Well, just dropped the taco off at the dealer for the frame replacement. I hope it all goes well. I pretty much gave them an all new front suspension to put on in place of the old. On the bright side they did actually give me a 2016 4runner for the week and it is pretty damn nice. Wife already wants to keep it.

 

Can you list out the front suspension parts they were will to swap out with free labor? And where did you purchase them, online?

I drive an older 02' and supposedly they're giving me a frame replacement, and if allowed I will do the same thing

 

Not sure what is included for a first Gen frame swap. It looks like it somewhat goes by the dealership as some where told they could not bring parts in or would still be charged additional labor.
For the second gen's a new lower control arm was included in the frame swap. I then bought used upper control arms and spindles off of the trade section on here. Bought new hubs off of a vendor here. Also upgraded the front to bilstein 6112's. Not sure if they will work for the first generation tacoma.
As the dealership that I went to told me, anything they have to remove to replace the frame can be swapped out since it has to come off anyways. Although I just got a huge list of repairs that they want to do to my truck since it is higher mileage. The total came out to over two grand or so.

Supposedly my truck goes in for a frame replacement in 2-3 months. Talk to the dealer today and he said anything we take off I can bring in and have replaced. I think I'm going to do a completely new front suspension.

However, currently I need new rear shoes brakes. My question is how do they dissamble the rear brakes? Would they disassemble the brakes and hardware or do they just remove the spindle and disconnect the brakes lines, then move it to the new frame. Wondering if the brake labor would be covered under the frame replacement.

The brake labor would not be covered,They dont have to take brakes apart to swap the frame,but ask really nice,bring them coffee and donuts and a wawa gift card like I did....things go smooth

Also my frame was not replaced with pulling the motor from the cab.

 

Heres another question. Going to replace fluids in the front, rear diff and transfer case and atf. Do it? It looks like when frame replacement comes they don't drain and refill any of it correct?

So after the past few months, I've read every thread on here in prep for my recall. Took it to get inspected in January, and just got the truck back today after I took it in on Monday.
Took it for a test drive, got on the interstate, everything felt good, looked fine. Pulled in my driveway..., whats that burning smell. Pop the hood, nothing. Look at the back, smoke coming from underneath. Now they told me my parking brake cable needed replacing, and at +$400, pshhh, said I'd do it myself. However i didnt plan on smoking it up on the way home. Loosened it up, think i'll be good till i replace it. Still a pain, wouldn't think I'd have to do that.

Anyway, here are my concerns... I had them flush the transmission fluid while they had it. Looking underneath, I have no idea if they did it or not. Is there a way to tell? You know when you change your oil, there are some fluid spots by the fill plug. I see absolutely nothing underneath the transmission, but maybe I shouldn't? Looks like no bolts/etc were taken off.

Also, I had them install 5100s at .85. I would have preferred to do it myself, however with the alignment they were doing anyway, I thought let them do it. I bought new stock coils, and put them on the shocks myself before i went in. So here's the thing, the front end looks super high now. Before, the front was 35" to the wheel well, after, 36 11/16. Approx the same for both sides. That seems high to me. And the spring seat is not on backwards, I checked before and now. Maybe I'd be ok with that, as i expected some lift out of the rear recall springs they put in, but my before measurement was 37 1/8, and my after is exactly the same. The tech said that would probably be the case. Anyway, my concern is that the front is too high, and the rear might sag eventually, and i don't want to be nose high. I'm fairly level now, but wanted to have a slight forward rake. Is it possible the stock coils were just that worn out, and the new ones are at a good level now? approx 80,000 miles on an 06. Yeah, this isn't all a frame recall question, but thought it might fit here with others maybe doing something similar. Thanks!

I personally think it's BS that Toyota had set a time limit to get your truck inspected. My truck was in a body shop when I found out that I had missed the cut off date. I never received a letter in the mail about it too.

They should at least allow one frame inspection regardless of the circumstances.

Contact Toyota and ask why YOU were not notified.... After they laugh and hang up, Pay a lawyer a few hundred to type up a formal looking follow up request. Other than that, you'd probably be better off poking a hot bucket of sand .... JMHO.

 

That's exactly it. When I asked about receiving the letter after the frame inspection date expired they told me tough s***.

 

Have you got under your truck and checked the frame? Even after my truck passed the LSD, I have been putting Fluid Film on the frame, especially before winter to extend the life of the frame.
