One does not simply "not let a Vizsla lick their face". Your face will be licked excessively whether you like it or not. Mine is "moderate" about it, by my friend's Vizsla that we watch all the time would throw a biggest fit if you don't let him express his love and pretty much exfoliate your face.

The only one I've brought up there with me is the white female. She's about 60lbs. My two males are 75 and 85. Combine that with me having a bad back, and they either sleep in the truck or the annex lol

You lifted her up into the RTT? How hard was it? I really want an RTT, but my dog is a pampered 55lb baby who sleeps in bed with us... under the blanket. He would be super bummed if he had to sleep in the truck away from us. Plus, when we go camping he is in a full guard dog mode and barks at every sound, not realizing that no one is scared of his sweater wearing ass. So it would be hard to make it calm down when he is not right next to us.

If you get the chance, see Seal Dog on the Smithsonian Channel. Fascinating.

I remember laughing when he said the criteria for the dog he chose was it was the craziest one in the place.

Yeah. I had to think about that one for a second. But then, dogs like that are often great dogs in the correct handler's control.

That's exactly right. You can't have a soft dog doing a job like that. You need a hard headed, jock type of a dog. "Participation does *not* count, I must win at everything!" dog

By the choosing time, those dogs are all in that category. The thing about the crazy ones is the handler's ability to control the dog. Wrong hands, the dog will win at everything.

Eh, it depends. Good breeder will select a dog that's right for *you*, based on the information they get from you. Thats why most of them make you fill up an extensive questionnaire before they even talk to you. It may be a little different with breeders that supply working dogs to police/military, but they would never send a runt to do a job like that.

Wasn't too bad getting her up. I just put her under my arm and clamor on up. Just have to brace myself a bit because she likes to give a big kick off the entry when I swing her up and through the door. I've almost fallen off the ladder backwards a couple times because of this. It is kinda tricky getting her down. She gets all stiff and awkward like she thinks she's going to fall out when I'm trying to pull her out when I'm on the ladder. I just have to more or less manhandle her and yank her out. Gretzky our biggest boy is kind of a pansy type like yours. He sleeps under the covers at home and demands attention so I thought he'd be a little bitch when we first got the RTT, but after enough STFU's he got used to it and is a champ now sleeping in the truck or annex.

    best name ever!

I'm gonna have to see if I could rent/borrow and RTT from someone for my next camping trip and see if I could make it work. RTT would make camping soooo much easier.

Go for it. You know mine is way high up on top of my 4Runner. You could easily mount yours not so high up on a bed rack and probably put the dog in the tent flat footed on the ground.

I spent some time training police dogs in my youth. By the time a handler gets to the dog, the dog has been mostly trained. The next phase is training the handler to work the dog/recognize how the dog works, read him, etc. before certification. And while purebreds make up a good percentage of the patrol dogs, don't underestimate the mixed breeds or even "runts". We had a dog that weighed in at 70ish pounds and never failed to take down an agitator. It's all about selection and the selection process is pretty intense. Both for the dog and for the handler.

    That's cool Ian!

I have never been real good at training dogs. I get them to come and sit and figure I'm done LOL.

I picked both my dogs as puppies out their litters the same way. The first male that jumped at me or tried to climb up my arm came home with me.

My criteria was want me as much as i want you LOL

When i got my Shiba inu i was renting a house that only allowed dogs up to 20lbs... I really wanted a dog but didn't care for most small breeds... Then one day while hiking through a state park i seen a shiba... Thought he was the coolest looking smaller dog ever... Did some research... Found out they got around 25lb pounds and called my landlord... He agreed... And That was that. Most stubborn dog i have ever owned but i love him. He was so smart right as a puppy. Potty trained in 2 days. If i had a treat he would come, sit, stand... But if i put the treats away he would look at me like i was stupid haha. These days he will come and sit without a treat... Inside the house only... But even Then he is looking for that treat.

My English Mastiff lab mix i adopted at 8weeks. I seen an ad from an adoption place trying to find them new homes. Now i have my own house and a couple acres of land so i figured what the Hell! I love labs and love mastiffs. Potty training him has been more difficult than the shiba. But teaching him to come and sit without treats has been much easier.
