So this is more of a general question, but still tacoma related. I have worked on 4 different vehicles in my life and changed oil in all of them. In my Tacoma and an Explorer I would change the oil, start it up, and everything was normal.

In the Mazda 3 and Honda Accord i have worked on, both make a loud noise at start up after an oil change and then it would stop after about 2-3 seconds and on subsequent start ups never repeated the sound until the next change.

In ALL these vehicles I have never filled the filter with oil beforehand.

What is causing this? Am I damaging something? I have always wondered what's wrong.

The engine is essentially running without oil for those seconds. It takes time to fill the empty oil filter before the rest of the engine receives any oil after a change. There isn't much you can do about it because most newish vehicles have an oil filter that is is oriented so that you can not pre-fill the filter with oil.

So if possible I should prefill?

Yes but that only works if the filter sits vertically. Otherwise the oil dumps out when you try to spin it on.

    Testing memory here..........

Thinking the Mazda & Honda are OHC with hydraulic lash adjusters (HLAs)?

The Tacoma is OHC, but with solid lash adjusters in bucket?

The Explorer is cam in block with hydraulic lifters?

If that's right, the HLAs have a tendency to drain faster. The start up noise you hear is the valves till the HLAs pump up again. It's unlikley a prefill of the filter would stop that (but it might reduce it) and it's also unlikely that any damage is being caused.

Thank Bill, I knew there was some sort of correlation. I think I may start pre-filling in all vehicles that I work on now (I still work on the Mazda, OBVIOUSLY the Tacoma, and Accord). I always warn the owners of the other two vehicles that there will be a loud, momentary noise at start up, but have always felt that is very "unprofessional". I take great pride in doing the best I can when working on a vehicle, regardless of whether I own it or not.

Guess I'm gonna be a prefiller from now on. Thanks guys, any more input from others is still welcome...I enjoy many different viewpoints.
