just curious if anybody has done this yet or at least looked at the possibility ,, I did a search couldn't find anything ,,wife and I are gonna be purchasing a boat which is gonna be close to the tow capacity of our DCSB sport and being that we live in Bc would love some extra confidence in stopping power to assist trailer brakes ,, would rather have more than not enough,,, thanks in advance

I was wondering the same thing, I heard the tundra caliper and rotor are a direct for it you just have to replace them and there you go you just need 18 inch wheels or bigger..

I don't know about about fitting Tundra stuff on the Tacoma. They have kits out for the Tacoma, 6 piston fronts and rear disc conversions, both of these are more than you could possibly ever need.

I'm not 100% sure of this but I think the 2016 tacos already have the Tundra brakes...

Crawl under there and look at the back of the caliper- it should say 13WL or 13WG, which is the Tundra brake caliper. "L" or "G" doesn't matter, it's just the angle of the brake fitting.

If they really did put tundra discs up front, why on earth didn't they put them in the rear too?

The non disk rears are still the only thing that bugs me about the truck I love otherwise.

The 2016 Tacoma has the same sized brakes (319x28mm) as the 2000-2006 Tundra (which also used rear drum brakes). The 2007-2017 Tundra has much larger brakes (354x32mm) but they will not fit on the Tacoma.

If you're looking for a factory upgrade, take a look at the 4Runner, which uses 338x28mm (2003-2009 Option) or 338x32mm (2010-2017) front brakes.

The 319mm brakes require 16-in. wheels.
The 338mm brakes require 17-in. wheels.
The 354mm brakes require 18-in. wheels.

 Here we go about the drums again.

Drums are absolutely, totally fine in this application. People have been led to believe the blanket statement that disc>drum in all situations, but that's wrong. Totally wrong.

Just as an example, look at this HEMTT:
    OshkoshM984HEMTT-1_0a92f73fc009c2b2bd1a2c219d278bdda5fb5adf.jpg
Man, that thing must have some huge disc brakes, right?

    Nope. Drums all around.

Drums are actually far more efficient in terms of the ratio of pressure applied to braking force produced. This is why most huge-ass bus/truck/hauler things have drums. Where drums do fall short is heat dissipation. Heat dissipation isn't as big of a deal on the rear axle of a Taco because most of that kinetic energy is getting turned into heat up front. Up front you do have those big 319mm discs to soak up that kinetic energy and dissipate it. Race cars have discs in the rear because their biggest issue is heat dissipation. Some even give up braking surface by poking holes in the rotor because they need so much heat to go away. So yes, if this was a Miata or a Corvette or something we were going to autocross with, boo drums. Otherwise, unless we're trying to keep an overloaded trailer going 55 down the world's steepest incline, trucks don't need that much heat dissipation in the rear.

To be perfectly honest, my Taco has better feeling brakes than the vast majority of disc-all-around cars I've driven. But hey, it's your truck so you're more than welcome to shell out $1000 bucks to SOS for rear discs. I'd wager you might find your 60-0 actually got worse.

    all tore up already
Look under a big vehicle sometime. Always drum brakes. Dont see where people have such issues with drums. They last forever and are proven to work or the heaviest road vehicles wouldnt use them. If they can stop 50 tons repeatedly with a good service life, im sure they are ok for all 5t capacity in the taco

    Are on the way!
Unfortunately the Tundra uses 5 lug rotors & wheels while Tacoma uses 6 lug.. So, I don't think the rotors would fit to good!

Note: I've never done any of this, it's all just "in theory" at this point. Buyer beware. This applies to 2005-2017 Tacoma 4WD and 2WD Pre-Runner/6-bolt setups.

If you wanted to do the 338x28mm brakes, you'd need the following parts:

    47730-60261 or 47730-60130-84 - Caliper, Front RH (Mark 13WH)
    47750-60261 or 47750-60130-84 - Caliper, Front LH (Mark 13WH)
47781-60120 - Backing Plate, Front RH
47782-60120 - Backing Plate, Front LH
43512-60151 - Rotor, Front Brake Disc (Qty: 2)

Brake pads, shims and fitting hardware are the same as the Tacoma and so can be reused. Backing plates can likely be ditched or cut if you were so inclined.

    --

If you wanted to do the 338x32mm brakes, you'd need the following parts:

    47730-60300 - Caliper, Front RH (Mark 14WA)
    47750-60300 - Caliper, Front LH (Mark 14WA)
47781-60140 - Backing Plate, Front RH
47782-60140 - Backing Plate, Front LH
43512-60191 - Rotor, Front Brake Disc (Qty: 2)
47314-60310 - Brake Tube, Front Hose to Caliper RH
47317-60130 - Brake Tube, Front Hose to Caliper LH

Brake pads, shims and fitting hardware are the same as the Tacoma and so can be reused. Again, backing plates can likely be ditched if you were so inclined (not sure if the factory ones can be modified as the rotors may sit closer to them as they are 4mm thicker). I don't know for sure that the brake tubes are required either, as they were the same for the 338x28mm calipers, but they're cheap.
