I like this! Took me a minute looking at the picture to figure out how it would flex but I see it now.

is it just the camera angle, or does that U shaped loop look like its just waiting to snag a rock and get ripped back? I'd think you'd want a couple 45' degree slider tubes forward of that, so if you did snag a rock, it would deflect upwards instead of getting ripped back (or stopping your truck cold)...

Armor is one of those things that is a delicate balance. There are certain things that are absolute no brainers such as bumpers, sliders, and at a minimum IFS skid plate. But it's not always more is better.
Adding skids on obtuse parts not only add additional weight, but also reduce overall clearance and can actually make wheeling more difficult. Perfect example...the diff diapers. The bottom of the toyota diffs are the strongest part of the whole damn thing. You can bash a rock going forward at 50 mph and barely make a scratch (the rear of the pumpkin is a whole different story...paper thin). But adding the diaper reduces ground clearance on the lowest part of the truck by almost an inch. It seems like every single time I've seen someone hung up on the rear diff...they had a diaper on. Same thing for front LCA skids. The weak park of the LCAs are the pivot wraps (on 2nd/3rd gens), not the bottoms of the LCA.
Sure some of you are thinking "better safe than sorry." And for that, no retort. I understand the mentality. But no matter what, there's always going to be a situation you didn't plan for and something is going to break. Shit happens, part of the game. Falling off a line and slamming down on a driveshaft sucks. But I wouldn't entirely call that a common occurrence. I've candy caned mine more than once as well and you can always drive home on the front two. I drove from Pismo to Tahoe in front wheel drive before. My 2 cents here is to think about the cost/benefit/impact ratio. It's not always a win:win like it is with sliders.

I just got off the phone with Jess ~$1200 for a custom 2nd gen shaft that's beefier.

I asked if the mid shaft can have a flange so you don't have to push out the U joint to disassemble it and that would be included in the price.

    Hmm....

That's insane. Just rewrap the rear half of the DS with .188 wall and get it balanced. I think mine was 150 bucks to get it wrapped, balanced, and shortened.

dam! I've had mine redone twice, Less than $200 each time. Don't think you need to spend that much.

That's the most you'll pay. I'm sure there are cheaper options but I asked for basically the best shaft he could build and what that would cost.

I've paid more for less shaft than that.

But that's a story for another day.

Hey guys, don't mean to interrupt the convo about how hard you want your shaft to be but @dakotasyota and I are planning a trip down for a week in September and want to wheel with you guys in the Sierras. Both full locked, full armor, 33's and both have +2 LT (well I in the next few weeks).
As of right now we want to run Slick rock, and deer valley. What other trails are around that difficulty in the area? And it would be awesome to set up a run with you guys. Current dates are leaving Sept. 8th or 9th here, and spend about a week in NorCal area.
