Dash cam that records both front and back, is about the ONLY addition to a vehicle that is an actual investment, since it WILL pay off once it saves your bacon from some lying scumbag.

Just be careful about something; most of the cheap chinese dashcams store the data on the card in undocumented formats, and come with access software that is more virus than utility. Try to find something that uses a common file format on a well known filesystem, so you can plug it into your computer and just click the file to have it play.

I would think the gas usage would not make Uber profitable in a truck but I always though a similar service offering to haul or tow would be great for the truck crowd. Cheaper then renting a truck at uhaul.

 

To me it just doesn't add up for an individual who's primary asset is a truck, as opposed to a people mover. The truck as a potential work vehicle and work multiplier is already more valuable of an asset than a people mover in many cases.

In the northern cities like mine the taxi/cab/uber/lyft market is severely depressed already, and until driverless cars are commonplace I doubt these services will really shine here. The weather makes the conditions for driving very hazardous during some seasons, even impossible if both the car and driver aren't very capable. I could see an opportunity for uber to offer service during poor weather. Unfortunately in a snow scenario driving for Uber or Lyft as it is today would require woefully high acceptance of personal liability. For such risk to fall on the driver makes the few potential benefits of driving our type of vehicle for these services null. Even helping people move things incurs accelerated wear on the vehicle, again reducing the profitability of the endeavor for the driver.

 

I would think that, in most jurisdictions, being involved in an accident while drunk with a DUI w/death on your record would get more than 40 days and a 1 year license suspension.

 

I'd say what a shame he killed someone and we still haven't learned a lesson. Kill somebody with a car when drunk, no more license. Period. Shred it. Go learn to ride a bike, dumbass.

 

Problem is a drunk will bike drunk too. In the dark. In black clothes with no lights. Or walk the same way.

Then the family will be all up suing you for wrongful death when you kill him when he weaves or steps out in front of you.

 

So, execution then?

 

Nah. Maybe required medication, the stuff that makes you sick, violently, when you imbibe. As well as AA. And a couple of Friday night shifts at a big city morgue. Maybe an autopsy or two on recently deceased alcoholics, see what a burnt out liver looks like...... Something to inspire them.

The goal should be to break them of the desire to drink. I realize it's an illness, and not easy to accomplish, but it can be done. And the person has to want to. Offering/requiring some 'want to' inspiration might be helpful.

 

See, you're talking about alcoholism, and I'm talking about driving being a privilege not a right. You kill somebody because you couldn't stay out of a car when drunk, I think that's enough. You. Killed. Somebody.

It's not about addiction, it's about every damn zombie in murica being able to drive around no matter what they do with the privilege.

The goal isn't about them, it's about all the rest of us and our right not to be killed by them.

 

I just want to say that a travesty of justice happened in this whole debacle. His insurance company should have paid for everything - period. With police reports and such it should have been pretty clear that he was at fault. And now that he was convicted (thru guilty plea) of drunk driving DURING that incident his insurance company needs to be made aware so they can take corrective action on their own part.

Also, if this man drove intoxicated in the past and killed someone I'm angry as hell that he only got 40 days in jail and a suspended license. At day 41 he'll be drinking and driving again - guaranteed.

 

All depends on the circumstances. In CA, if you cause a serious injury it is a felony DUI. There's also sentencing enhancements the higher the BAC is, multiple offenses (4 in 10 years makes it a felony), causing a collision, refusing to provide a blood or breath sample, etc etc...but many of those just mean bigger fines and not more jail time.

You can make money driving during the day. That's what I do. Not sure if anyone read my post about it.

 

From the drivers I have spoken to, its already not that profitable. Uber or Lyft and the rest sell themselves as a way to make easy money with your spare time, but don't buy into it. The guys I have talked to work 7 days a week, about 10 hours a day, to take home $3000 or less a month. On top of that, you deal with drunks who will jack up your car, pay for your gas, jack up the mileage on your truck, etc. The added maintenance alone to me wouldn't be worth it.
