Traction Control issues with Supercharger

Not to be an ass... but... this comes from Toyota directly..

They CALL it an "Automatic Limited-slip Differential" but admit it uses the brakes. They then try to say it's better than a mechanical limited slip diff. So... marketing term? Because they sure are marketing it as "limited slip differential".

 

Jeez if you drove like this even before a super charger you must have been horrible to be passenger to.

It also needs to be said: the factory e-locker disables all traction control when turned on and actually makes spinning the axle really easy.

 

My track toy at the moment with 4 wheel disc brakes and a LSD.

 

Sweet. Dig the gumballs! Discs off a Granada in the front and part of a 9" diff swap out of something for the rear?

 

Under that patina- this all drum car now has a front CSRP disc conversion(4 piston caliper) on the front- adjustable proportioning valve, roller spring mount perches and roller adjustable strut rod, shelby drop on the upper a-arm and the rear is 8.8 out of an explorer narrowed that gives the rear discs, LSD, and 3:73 gears. If that all makes sense. I have spent all my energy on the handling and left the mild 302 alone.

 

Yes but they named it the Trac (a-trac) system. I think what you referenced is just an explanation of what it does

 

Someone once said, related to autox, 'if you can't go fast with 90hp, 900 won't help.' Well, that has some application (albeit not as much) to HPDE rides too. Vehicle handling and driver skill can overcome a lot of horsepower shortfall in the amateur ranks. Sent many a V8 with a young driver home scratching his head with my creaky bones in a little 4 banger.

Understand your rear setup and brakes. Both are pretty common in hot rods/street rods. The other makes some sense, but I'm not a Ford guy, so I've not experienced the bits you name, but I know what your objective is!

 

Considering that is a press release... I don't see "A-Trac" anywhere in there. My understanding is that "A-Trac" is what they call it on the 2016+.

It was sold to me as a "Limited Slip Differential".

 

No Trac and a-trac is 09+. There is also auto-lsd, but it's not sold to you as" Limited Slip Differential", but rather automatic lsd (uses the brakes)

 

I know that you want to be right soooo bad that you're willing to tell me what I WAS and WAS NOT told. But the truth is... it WAS sold to me as "Limited Slip Differential". You weren't there.

Ultimately, you're trying to argue an issue purely based on semantics.

But, out of curiosity sake so I can catch up with you... please show me where my A-Trac button is.



The 2015 Tacoma owner's manual has a section for Auto LSD and A-Trac. Both say you'll have a specific button. I do not have an A-Trac button. Only the VSC/Auto LSD button (vehicle with squiggles).

The idea of applying the brake on a spinning wheel has always been "traction control" to me, and if the car is able to striaghten itself by applying various braking pressures on any given wheel, that is "stability control". The fact that Toyota is calling it "Auto LSD" is weak IMO and even daring to sell it as a straight up "Limited Slip Differential" is total BS. They're very different things that have somewhat similar results. A limited slip differential is a mechanical device that has been around for decades. If somebody told me I was getting an LSD and sold me a system that uses wheel sensors and the computer to apply the brake on a spinning wheel I'd be pissed.

 

Well if you are talking about your specific buying experience, I can't help it if your salesman gave you inaccurate info. I was talking about Toyota as a whole.

The point is, you said lsd is a computer controlled function. This is not true, lsd is a mechanical function.

 

Toyota has been doing it for quite a while apparently... it's right in their press releases.

When I was considering the Chevy Colorado vs the Tacoma I asked whether each had an LSD. Ultimately I bought the right truck. But, it was sold to me as having an LSD.

 

Unless it's an LSD on a Tacoma. Then it's computer controlled. Whether they call it LSD or Auto LSD is just marketing magic. That was my point earlier. I know there's a difference between a real mechanical LSD and an brake controlled one.

 

Once again not true. 05-08 had true mechanical lsd. 09+ has "auto-lsd" which is not lsd.

 

Once again. Semantics. Yes perhaps they ONCE had a real LSD. But now they are selling a brake controlled slip regulator and calling it an Auto LSD (LSD).

I really don't know what you think you're trying to prove. Back in the 1940's smoking was cool. Today it's known to cause cancer. Should we argue that smoking is cool and doesn't hurt people simply because in the 1940's that's what was 'reality' in the day?

The point is... present day... in reality... Toyota is using the term "Limited Slip Differential" to sell a product that isn't a mechanical LSD. They are making it sound like a great product by manipulating marketing language and saying "Auto LSD" to make you think, if you don't research deep enough, that you're getting an LSD.

No bro, just no. You said it yourself, they call it an auto lsd. If you don't research to learn what that is that is your own dumb fault.

 

Ok I've been reading even more of the VSC / Auto LSD / TRAC threads here and it's still not adding up.

Here's a good summary:

When I hit the traction control button on the dash, Auto LSD lights up full-time and VSC goes on and off at seemingly random times.

Auto LSD should be applying the brake to the spinning wheel, sending torque to the opposite wheel.
And that's the issue: it isn't happening.

 

You can have a locker and Toyota's "Auto LSD" at the same time. You can't have a locker and a true limited slip differential at the same time. Toyota's "Auto LSD" is traditionally called "traction control" and yes, it should be helping you when you spin your tires while accelerating.

Have you compared performance with and without the "Auto LSD" activated? Light em up at a stop sign with it on and again with it off. It's possible that it's helping you somewhat but you're still slipping a bit, this should reveal if that's the case.
