I'm looking to replace the rear chrome bumper on my spruce mica SR5 with a color matched or black bumper. For the cost of just ordering one from Toyota, I figured why not upgrade instead.

I've done what feels like endless research on armored bumpers, but cannot find any that maintain the class IV towing capacity of the factory tow package. If anyone can answer this, it would be greatly appreciated... Is there an aftermarket armored bumper that guarantees the class IV tow rating? I've seen numerous class III's, but not sure I want to upgrade the bumper while lowering the truck's towing capacity.

    Thanks all in advance!

I believe the Body Armour rear bumper retains the factory hitch

SOS concepts, eddy uses the factory hitch so your tow rating dosent change any.

Thanks Matt, already sent Eddy a message. I see you're another MD'er. Any chance you mean Carroll County by Central MD?

Nope, Anne Arundel. im not quite far enough south for southern MD, but im not really northern either.

But when you get your bumper from him, let me know, i want to see one in person, as his price with swingout is quite a bit lower than the other fab places on here

Gotcha. I'm Carroll County, so not too far away. Still have a few questions about the standard bumper from SOS. A few of the photos show what looks like the top mounting points for stock bumper on the receiver, and it sticks out quite a bit. I like the HC look, but not comfortable with chopping part of a perfectly good truck off!

Can't wait to do something though... the chrome is starting do drive me crazy.

Hey Homer, how sturdy is that HC bumper on yours? For instance, could you put a lift on the bumper directly behind the rear wheel, and pick up the truck with no problems? Also, any other rear bumpers out there besides SOS that keep the Class IV tow rating?thanks all!

Bump for info. I'd like to find a plate bumper with the features below, but haven't had any luck yet.

Retains class IV receiver or is equally rated
Spare tire and Jerry can swing outs
    Shackle recovery points
Optional: flush mount lights and high-lift cutouts

    Bueller?

So the thing with the hitch's on these aftermarket plate bumpers, is none are DOT certified. It would just cost them WAY too much money and just isn't feasible. They are extremely beefy and exceed our trucks capabilities though, so you won't have any problems with any of them.

For the rest of the options, you'll just have to shop around. A couple good choices would be SOS concepts or Pelfrybilt

    a bunch of new/used parts....and some skids.
Have you tried sanding and painting it with bedliner? I was getting pretty annoyed with the look of chrome on my truck so I bedlined the grill surround and the rear bumper. Looks a lot better now; no more dull chrome finish.

I get that DOT certification is a bear. I'm not as interested in gaining clearance, so a quality plate bumper with the other features that lets me keep my stock receiver would fit the bill just fine. I suppose I could find someone to make me a one-off.

WHAT?!?! nah, that ain't true. Few of the aftermarket ones make a claim towards towing capacity because of DOT certification and Liability. That said I feel 100% confident with the towing capacity of SOSconcepts bumpers as well as others.

4x Innovations bumper has a DOT approved class 3 hitch. I have it on my Taco and am pleased with it.
