I killed my mom's slant 6 the 1st time I drove it

We should all chip in, buy it and fix it up, then use it like an NE BS Zipcar!

 

What did you do, change the oil and refill it with antifreeze and gasoline? Or did you try and treat it like a race car and rev nuts off of it?

Yeah, but those are usually the people who haven't done any maintenance, haven't taken care of what they're selling. If they've had it a while that stuff really adds up.

You are right on the "nothing " theme BUT Con and I break the normal anyhow....been together since '75 and married since '82
And I still spoil the hell out of her......and we do live life

Neither, my Mom had just bought it and I took it out for a drive. I hit 75 on the highway and by the time I got off the highway at the next exit it was spitting and farting all over the place. I pulled right over and checked the oil and saw nothing on the dipstick. Added a full quart before I saw anything. It still ran but it must have spun a bearing or something because it had an terrible knock to it after that. My Mom only owned it for about a hour before I brought it back, she got her money back

 

Aha. Yeah, that'd do it. Old Detroit iron doesn't like being run at high speed when it's low on oil.

Edit- I actually can tell if my Slant is at all low because the valves get noisy (noisier than usual, that is)

At this rate you better start applying to auto magazines. I bet that would be a fun job.

 

my friend writes for them, jalopnik, and road and track so here and there he's asked me to do a write up for him. i don't think i get into enough cool events to be a writer on the regular, but it would definitely be fun. he has a full time job though so i don't think it pays the bills

 

Just did the survey of the sailboat I'm going to buy. Waiting on the official report! May actually get it in the water this year.

351's are priced similarly to the 350's around here. You can pick up a short block for $100-150, a complete motor for $300-400 out of Craigslist. Seems like you see more of the 350's though. Most of the Ford motors I see in CL here are the old 300's, since you couldn't kill them.

 

These days, just get a crate motor of your choice for decent prices. Me, I'd put a 347 stroker in it.
