so about 3 weeks ago my friend rear ended me at a yield sign and totaled my truck the bed needs to be replaced entirely along with the rear bumper (obviously), driver side tail light, and tail gate. The bed kicked up and hit the cab making a dent in the cab and a large area of paint that kinda chipped off in one lump. I was wondering if it was possible to have just this area painted and how much you think it would run me if it was possible. If it is possible, how much would it be to paint the roof as well? (hail damage). Im trying to avoid dropping over $3k on a real, well done, paint job for the whole truck so if i can get a great paint job just in the areas I need a great paint job that'd be optimal. And before you say theres probably frame damage, there isn't as far as the insurance, a body shop, and I can see. The bed buckled badly. Heres a pic of the area Id need painted.

It used to be fresh clean metal but i was on vacation just a day or two after the accident for 2 weeks. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

    OME and worth every penny.
Ask around in your area who does small jobs out of their garage and get some estimates for your area.
Besides the paint that costs the close to the same everywhere, labor for these kinds of jobs vary wildly.
Shops are usually full of work so they're rarely hard up for small jobs.

So your looking for a bed already the same color?

Yes I have the money, but when we got an estimate it was $2000 and I didn't think such a small area would be worth so much, I could be wrong though that's why I'm asking. The cab just has pin striping and some minor scratches no major paint defects aside from the roof.
Thanks, I'll look around, my main concern is getting a good quality paint I've heard horror stories from Maaco for example. And yes I'm currently looking for a black bed with little to no rust (mine had almost none after I did the rust repair on one spot) hopefully looking to spend less than $1500 on that but I'm not sure haven't seen many around to get an idea of prices

You can't expect cheap, piecemeal work to be 'great'. It takes a bit more than just grabbing a can of black and spraying over the bare metal and calling it a day. The pic sucks on my computer, but it looks to me like the first step is going to involve removing the bed.

its a small enough area that I wouldn't expect it to take very long or very much work to make pretty again its about 3 by 8 inches of area that need it, I never said it had to be "cheap" I just don't want to paint the entire truck if I don't have to and can't imagine a job like this costing more than $1k. My concern is keeping it from peeling 2 years from now. I can take the bed off before painting it to save the labor if I have to, doesn't take much. Here's a better pic in the daylight

That's one thing that has always bothered me about the service industry. The Internet has only made it worse, everyone loves to tell you what they think something should cost. If you're getting estimates for $2k that's the market rate. IMO you really need to discuss with the bodyshop if there's a way to save on labor, removing the bed would be a start, but are they going to blend this panel into the bed during paint?

That was the price for painting the entire cab, I was more looking for an answer as to whether people even do it like this, and as some have said, it seems i may need to resort to someone painting out of their garage. And I fail to see what the issue is with other peoples ideas on what something would cost? Ill have to go to a few other places then and see what they have to say. I am not entirely sure how it would turn out with a different bed and a freshly painted area but I'm hoping its not too bad. Thanks for the suggestions

I think if you try and spot paint just that one area, even with a good painter you're going to notice. If it was me I'd paint the whole cab and be done with it

Just wondering...Did the price include the body work for the dent and the hail damage on the roof?

Except thats not a 3x8 section. From what i can see in the pic its quite a bit more. Paint work isn't like filing a hole in the ground. If you approach it that way is going to go badly. And its black. In the paint world, gloss black is one of the hardest colors to do right. So you have a few things working against you.

damn... id make my friend buy me a truck the trouble your going through right now to "fix your truck " itll never be the same and your just out there spending time and money to fix your buds mistake lol that's just me though

    im an ass hole:thumbsup:

why go through insurance and have our rates go up when you can just buy another tacoma and be over it...

for me the worst part of this situation if i was you, would be having to find someone to fix my shit that should of been taken care of for you i know you want good paint but honestly just dont go to macco and tip the painter $50 your gona be fine

if your worried about paint, buy your own and talk to the painter when you pay him

i had a paint job from macco they over sprayed my frame so bad i was pissed and took it back nothing happend

That wasn't including body work, they summed the labor together for assembly and whatnot so I'm not sure exactly what the body work would cost
Insurance didn't go up at all apparently (for me) since it wasn't my fault. Thing is I've got a lot of work into it including replacing the motor literally just last summer (which helped a ton with the value). I'm pretty dedicated to this thing, don't wanna give it up that easy. The hardest part I think will be doing this and finding a bed. Thanks for the suggestions though and reaffirming that Maaco is no good lol. I'll shop around on Friday and see what some shops have to say, she'll be on the road again soon I hope.

Maaco's not necessarily bad, they just don't spend time and use as cheap of material as possible.
If you upgrade paint and tape it yourself, they're painters are about as good as most.

I wouldn't get them to do body work though and that's a bad spot for a dent.

Good luck with this one. I'm afraid your needing stars to align.

I'm starting to think the dent isn't that big of a deal really, its hardly noticeable to me at least but then again if I can get it out for a decent price I will, and yea I'm more concerned with paint than the actual work because most of the work from different places will probably turn out similar like you said

Or you could get OCD like me and decide the only way it will ever be uniform for a decent price is to bed line it your self. Then you can join my cool kids club which is very small and not so popular...:rain:
