Had a BMW X3, didn't need the AWD, needed a bed due to having a house and being limited on what I could and could not haul. The 4 Door Tacoma and Short Bed fit the bill. Nice not having to run 91 Octane too.

When I was at the dealer looking at the taco I saw the trail edition 4runner. Love it, gorgeous. But I need something I can put a few sheets of plywood and drywall in for home renos, also want something for camping and the taco seems to better fit.

That and the 4runner has a much higher price tag.

Price point to high for a 4runner vs a TRD OR. Besides, I love pickup trucks.

In the process of trading a fully loaded TRD Sport for a 4Runner limited.

If you can use the bed and want marginally better mpgs get a Taco.

For me I needed more interior space (2 kids), and the Taco looked like a kid's car in my new neighborhood (platinums and high countries in every driveway).

I just traded my 14' 4runner Trail Edition Premium for a 16' Tacoma Off Road. I love them both ;-)

our loaded sport only came about 4k less than my 4runner limited with add ons. but then again we have best setup. my 4runner, the wardens Tacoma and daughters highlander and son's camry xse which wasn't shown :)

and yes my father was a Toyota person since the 70's, I've been one since the 80's and now my family is a Toyota family.

Can't do with a 4 runner what I use my truck to do. Simple. Besides, my '68 Land Cruiser suites my desire for a "4 runner-like " vehicle.
And we have an Outback for everything else.

The only reason I didn't get a 4runner is because I really wanted a manual.

I love the look of the 4runners and i'm sure they're great vehicles. I decided to go with a 16tacoma DCSB OF manual trans. Its more logical i can hit up the beach, hashing trails, just to name a few. I could always put a camper on the back and load more people or use it for camping... hahaha.... Also the manual trans, i will not settle for an automatic vehicle, I also forgot to mention more cargo inside as well when you pull the seats down.

If only the tacoma had the same scar face look as the runner that would be so badass.

I have a '10 4R Trail with CRAWL, A-Trac, Multi-Terrian, and KDSS, only 90k miles. I don't use any of it. My driving ability surpasses the conditions I drive and I just don't need them. (I suppose the KDSS may have improved somethings in the feel, but I never noticed it.) I'm moving to a Taco because I want a bed that can be hosed out, a manual transmission, and the flexibility (modularity) of carrying any/all of my toys that are rack bound.

I'm giving up a little bit of back seat leg room (wife has a Sequoia and its our family traveler) and not much else. The fancy driving modes don't do anything for me. They might if one of my daughters was driving it, but they wouldn't know how to use them anyways.

Love my 4runner, had 3 Tacomas prior to buying it. IMO, the only reason to get a Taco over a runner is being in frequent need of having the convenience of a bed. With the various issues people are experiencing with the new trucks might be another good reason to get the runner. They are trail climbing beasts tho, no slacking even in a stock runner.

some of this, a little of that
I traded my 2008 Tacoma last night and picked up a 2016 Trail premium. They gave me just over $20K in trade in so I'm good with it. I didn't use the bed but a couple times a year and we'll get a lot more use with the 4runner. It has a lot more rear leg room, more options than the Tacoma's do now and some they don't even offer on the Tacoma and rides really freaking nicely. When I compared the 2016 tacos to the 4runners I was sorry to say they tacos just seem sparse and it was only $1900 more than the TRD OR. I'll miss the hell out the Tacoma, it was the 1st new car I bought for myself but damn the 4runner is nice.

I'm confused. Why would someone who needs a truck be looking at a 4R?

I need a truck to haul my motorcycles, I can't do that on the 4R.

needs change over time, for me the reasons I needed a truck 8 years ago don't exist any longer. If I needed to haul a bike there are options out there, trailer or hitch mounted carriers.
