I just got 23.7 on a 40mile drive just now on my lift with stock tires and 87 10% ethanol. The key is all driving habits, keep the foot light and coast as much as you can. Who cares if assholes honk or pass you. Just do anything 65mph or less and you'll get good mpg.

Readings came from a calibrated scan gauge 2

I have an access cab 4x4 TRDOR, no tonneau cover, and average about 18-22 in town, 21-23 highway. I use top tier gas, 93 or 89 octane and drive fairly conservative most of the time. Stock wheels and tires....for now.....

    This mirrors my experience.

I did have my truck serviced this Tuesday . It's at 6300km and I had the dealer do service 2 (includes service 1), check tranny fluid (full from factory), torque leaf u-bolts, and grease all zerks on u-joints. They also reset the tranny learning logic for me.

Truck drives 10x smoother and feels lighter/more agile. (And in this department I didn't have any complaints to begin with.) Fuel economy also seems to have increased 3-4mpg. (Will need to monitor this over a longer term.)

Are you saying that the tranny is smoother after they reset it? Doesn't seem like they did anything in the service. Do you know if you got a tranny program update? I go in for my 5k service in 2 weeks.

The entire drivetrain is smoother. Don't think they did any software updates.

I have a 2nd Gen, but the single best way I improve my fuel economy is by not revving over 1500rpms and drive at a top speed of 60mph.
When I start getting a lead foot at green lights or go on road trips and travel about 75mph my mileage tanks.

I average 23 day to day. Road trip I will get 18-19.

Almost 100% of my commuting is highway. I live and work within 2 miles of the highway. I think why a lot of people get crappy mileage is because they are driving pretty fast. If you can drive slow, do it. Also don't buy huge/heavy wheels and tires.

MPG aside, the tech at the dealership that worked on my truck advised me to give the truck more gas than less. According to him, feathering the pedal will keep the RPMs low enough for the truck to get confused as to whether you want a higher or lower gear, and will result in frequent gear changes. Doing this during the 'learning' phase will also ensure you get plagued with the unnecessary gear changes until the learned behaviour is reset.

He also explained that the learning process is not a question of mileage, but a question of running through various situations. During the learning phase, the truck wants you to do as many varied things as possible (ex. drive in city, drive on highway, drive uphill, drive downhill, drive slow, drive fast, etc.), and a "complete combination" of these various situations results in a "cycle." The software needs to go through several of these cycles to learn your driving style. Sounds reasonable to me.

    Sorry, but no.

The other work you state "torque leaf u-bolts, and grease all zerks on u-joints. They also reset the tranny learning logic." can make a lot of the difference, particularly if the u bolts were loose and the u joints were dry.

Resetting the transmission was quite likely the big winner for you though.

Good to see some things start improving for folks!

I drive 8.5 miles to and from work each day. I get 20mpg going downhill to work and 18mpg when coming home from work because it's up hill and the traffic getting to the freeway is much worse.

I can get 26mpg when cruising at 60mph on freeway or highway. I usually drive around this speed. We took a trip to the El Paso Mountains and did 40+ miles of easy off roading and the truck idled for about 2 hours total. It was all highway and freeway to get there and the truck was at 18.8mpg after we got home at 255 miles. The v6 hardly sips any gas when idling due to the simulated atkinson cycle.

The thing is, the improvements I'm feeling are not limited to shifting, but rather general driving, even when keeping speed constant. U bolt torque and tranny reset wouldn't affect that. Greasing the zerks? Perhaps.

During the purchase my salesman told me the oil these trucks come with is somehow intentionally different from the oil that's used after first oil change. I'm certainly not in that "I changed oil brands and gained 60 horsepower" camp, but if the oil truly is different, I can see that affecting the driving feel. Theoretically.

At the end of the day, things went from good to better, so no complaints here.
