I think Toyota rested on their laurels with this redesign. Hell, it wasn't even a clean sheet redesign after a DECADE. GM is closing in on sales and Tacoma sales are down in the last few months in a very healthy truck market.

There are a handful of us that are in pretty deep with issues on our 3rd gen. We have cases with corporate and some here in this thread have sought legal counsel. What you come to find out, once you're up to your knees in this stuff with senior leadership from Toyota, regional engineers and dealership management is that Toyota knows there are at least 3 or 4 fairly widespread issues with these trucks. I think you're probably smart to wait until Toyota figures some of this stuff out. If Toyota corporate and Toyota regional tech reps and engineers are telling us "yes it's a known issue, no we don't have a fix yet but we are working on it" there is probably some concern to be had. The good news is that they're starting to acknowledge that the truck has some issues to sort out.

I'd also add that for every person here complaining you'll have overly defensive brand loyalists that would probably never admit to their truck having a problem and will jump in front of traffic to defend the name of Toyota and shoot down claims of imperfection.

Ok, I just got out new Ford 2.7 eco boost and they have posts on their site saying same shit, consumer reports, etc... No such thing as perfect. If Honda is so great, why did they stop first time? Great lawn mowers and cars, trucks?? Not so sure. Not bashing Honda, respect the hell out of the brand and tried to get my wife to buy a Honda car, but she wanted her little Prius C, which I hate, but she loves and gets 50-60 mpg daily with Texas heat and big hills.

We have a 2016 Tacoma and a 2012 Pilot (which is really a Ridgeline with a back seat). One is a car and one is a truck. If you're using offroad or for towing at all, I would stick with the Tacoma. I'm a huge fan of both vehicles for what they are.

I do believe that the problems on this board are in many cases a vocal minority. This is the best Toyota truck ever in my opinion, and I've owned a few. If you want a thorough review, I'd check out the long-term review on Edmunds.

Best of luck with your decision.

BINGO. Saying it how it is. Respect your decision you went with a 6MT in your Tacoma. Automatics suck ass.

The real reason I first mentioned the Honda Ridgeline in this post in the beginning is that it fits the needs of the OP's original post!

11K miles now on my SR5 and it's been perfect. You have to remember that a tiny fraction of all owners participate here.

Why must you be so immature and a keyboard warrior.

I've had plenty of time with the 3rd gen. You don't know what I do for work, or the sources of information I've scoured across.

Please, knock off the childish talk, and grow up and treat people with respect.

    Thanks, Jake.

    None yet but hopefully soon
I bought a 2016 Tacoma because I wanted a midsized truck, I liked the upgrades over Gen 2 and I wanted a moonroof. I use the hell out of a moonroof so the GM twins not having that was literally a dealbreaker for me.

I bought an '06 because I didn't want to risk a brand new model in '05. But, all the bugs weren't worked out yet. However, I've had all the recalls performed and it's a fairly solid truck. For everybody having problems with the '16 it seems there is somebody totally satisfied with the truck. This makes me believe that the truck is OK, but Toyota's quality control isn't. Early Toyota trucks were hard core reliable. I think Toyota needs to get back to the strict quality control that made these rigs famous in the first place. Coming out of the factory with low fluids, diff problems, tranny problems, Etc, is just sloppy. If your new truck has issues and your buddy's new truck doesn't, somebody isn't doing their job somewhere on the assembly or final inspection in my humble opinion.

THIS! I stated this earlier. I do believe those with issues and truly feel for them, but also don't think they are majority of owners. Again, go look at other brand forums and come back.

I've never ignored or not believed those with real issues. I agree with person who said buy extended warranty, platinum. Why? Hell, I just don't trust ANY auto maker. Look, Chevy fk killed people just a few short years ago, Honda and massive airbag issue that they are still selling, Ford has had more than a few, and Dodge sucks. I test drove a Ram brand new and damn thing was wobbling on hwy. rebates for big 3 because they are massively overpriced to begin with.

So why not keep it and let it do what you need it to do for you? It should easily do that another 10+ years, unless it has unusually high mileage you didn't mention.

Yep. I don't have a 'real truck' either. I have a '13 Tacoma, 5 lug 2wd. Use it similar to you. Don't need 4wd, don't need lift, don't care that others think my truck isn't manly enough.

So again, even if you need another truck for some reason, why buy new? If you want Toyota, there are nice base examples with low miles out there. They aren't as popular (not cool) so the pricing is more reasonable.

If you need 4wd (snow on streets?) find a nice '14 or '15.

I wouldn't buy a '16 either. Not for the reasons you cite, but because I don't like the looks, size or cost. Mine does what I need it to do just fine.

That said. If I liked the looks, size and price, and felt new was the right choice, I'd still buy a Tacoma. I'd just pay attention to a couple of the issues mentioned here to be safe, and drive on. It is for the most part overplayed. I'm sure some of the issues are very discouraging on a $35k purchase, but still, they aren't the end of the world.

We'll have tougher choices voting for cancer or a heart attack come November than this paltry truck decision stuff. :(

Been driving over 30 years now. Not one of the cars I've owned was perfect. And even if they were they need maintenance. My first dozen I wrenched on. These days I do less and less. Last 6 were BMW so I did NO DIY maintenance on them. I got less than 200 miles on my new 16 and I bought it after reading hundreds of threads here. Most people rightfully have loved their Taco's and it shows. Just today getting gas in east county San Diego 6 of the 10 vehicles at the pumps were Tacomas. The OP will make up his own mind but I think what he is looking for is a bit of confirmation that the issues are not widespread and or that serious. Well it looks to me that in July 2016 they are not too widespread and while some are serious, they can be remedied by working with Toyota. I love mine and don't regret the purchase.
