I had a 2007 and gave it up at 138,000 trouble free miles. Paint perfect, no rust, drove like a champ. Here is a door at 135,000

I picked up my 2016 in early June and currently have 2081 miles. My first vehicle 12 years ago was a 2001 and I've owned many since then including 1st generation and 2nd generation models. I can honestly say hands down this has been my favorite. To the point that I already know when it gets close to 100k I'll be trading it in for another third generation, probably a 2019 model.

I've been somewhat put off from buying a 3rd gen as well after spending time on the forum. I have a 2014 prerunner with 24k miles that hasn't given me a single issue, but I would really like a new TRD Sport 4x4 in Inferno..

Maybe if that configuration pops up at a local dealer I'll have a change of heart. :)

My advice would be to keep the 2010 another year or so unless your heart is set on a new truck.

I want a new Taco, but I am certainly going to wait a bit and see if the 2017's show up here with some of the same issues.

I have a perfectly good 2013. Or I should say had. Narrowly avoided a head-on Saturday evening so it now has damage to the front passenger side, suspension, etc. Initial estimate sits at $3000 but it doesn't include the suspension damage and other stuff we discovered on deeper inspection. Probably going to be $5000 to fix, plus a diminished value claim I will file.

I hope it is fixed like brand new, but that is unlikely. So my situation is a little different now.

So enlighten us with your experience with the 3rd Gen and what you do for work. It could certainly help us understand your point of view better and also possibly contribute something constructive that could help the rest of us be better informed about the 3rd Gens. Being vague doesn't help the cause. Help us out here.

Sounds like you made your decision. What more do you want to hear? You seem like an intelligent, informed consumer. You've driven both, listed what you like and don't like about each and voiced your concerns. This is only a decision you can make for yourself. Don't expect to hear anything life-changing in this thread that will make you see the light. You need to figure it out for yourself, sorry to say.

Don't listen to what any of them say. It has made me paranoid over my truck and I have even had it at Toyota to check stuff and it is perfect!

I had some transmission issues that took three tries to get it "fixed/resolved". It's much better now, and just accept that some of th symptoms I was experiencing are just quirks/characteristics of the truck and nothing is being damaged, etc. Things improved once they added transmission fluid and reset the ECU/learning and started over with a properly filled transmission. I'm fine with all that and have had sees issues since and have not experienced any of the other issues others are having. With that said, what really had turned me off to the brand, and have mentioned this in the other threads, if how Toyota Customer Service handles these issues and treats their customers. It took three visits to two different dealerships and several calls and work orders opened up with Toyota Customer Service to get things addressed. And both times I was told I would received a call back from Toyota Customer service in 24-48 hours and never received a call. One of the times I was told "the system is down" so my best guess is the person I was speaking to never even entered in the information, so for all I know that call was never even documented.

Great trucks, I'm happy with the performance of the truck now that my initial issues have subsided and were fixed, but the road to get to this point was necessary and the customer service is horrible.

If Honda had concentrated on tow capacity rather than 0-60 times and exterior looks rather than interior so much they might have had something.

I've only got 300 miles on my Tacoma, so I lack the luxury of hindsight at this point. However I can tell you I did research and test drive a lot of trucks before making the decision to buy my 3rd gen. The GM twins, F-150 and even a F-350 4 door 8' bed monster were all in the running. My previous truck of 12+ years was a 1998 Dodge 2500 quad cab, 8' diesel 5spd. Great motor but I had to spend quite a bit of $$ to fix 'pesky' Dodge issues. Anyway I digress...

    I have a couple observations:
    1. Personally (just my own opinion) if I owned a Toyota truck with only 90K on the odo and it did what I wanted to do and I liked it and it was trouble free- I would not get rid of it. That's just me. My old truck was long in the tooth (over 210,000 miles) with regular repairs and maintenance costs. It was time for a new truck but it served me well for over a decade.

    2. All modern cars have issues. All of them. Go kook at the NHSTB website for model reviews / issues and I swear no one with a sane mind would buy a car ever. Seriously!

This is a redesigned model with a new motor/tranny so I fully expected some bumps when I purchased my 3rd gen. Maybe this model turns out to be a dud, maybe not. Here's my take on it- if I don't like the truck- I'll sell it and buy another. It is that simple. Regardless of ALL the issues reported here, Tacoma's have a hell of a resale value. Plus I'm older, I make a lot of money and I'm just not worried about being a guinea pig :) .

    3. As far as this forum- there are some really good, solid reviews of this Tacoma found on this site, and yes there are a number of people with reported issues, some of them quite serious and bear monitoring. I truly hope they get it sorted out to their benefit.

However like any internet forum- problems get amplified, no problems go unnoticed. Plus you have to look at the demographics between Honda Ridgeline owners vs. Tacoma owners. I'll refrain from drawing conclusions but I hope you see what I'm getting at. In my opinion you really have to do a lot more separating of the wheat from the chaff on this forum.

Good luck, I hope you make a well reasoned decision and most importantly enjoy whichever path you choose!

Imo there are some Toyota people in here that really know their stuff from years of experience and nothing goes unnoticed. Don't think that's true for the Honda in reading their forum.

2017s are a few months off, right? Why not wait for those to come out? Bound to have less issues and NOT the first year of a new model, it will have better resale value in the future.

Be thankful your not looking at getting a new Jeep. Read up on the issues of those if you really want to get turned off on buying a new vehical. 2016 Taco problems are minor compared to those Jeeps.

Beautifully stated and should be posted in all threads about Tacoma problems. The truck is an absolute joy, even with these personality flaws.

Put it in 4 wheel low and you'll beg to differ. I like the face that it feels like a civic around the city... more efficient.

I agree, but there is no way I would base a decision going by what I read on the internet:facepalm:
