Just wanted to chime back in about my LEER. I've been dragging around this 13.5' yak with no issues (weight is about 90lbs rigged to the rack.)

Also I am 5'5 and I found I can sit crosslegged comfortably in the camper shell this weekend, where it was noticably 10 degrees cooler than in the sun.

It is an Action Contour III, made by ARE, and supposedly the same as ARE V series.

Any strong opinions or reviews on the ARE MX shell? Id be putting it on a trd or dclb. I need to order soon and am looking for a shell that rises up above cab height for more car camping space and also windoors for better access. It seems this is best fit, but looking for anyone with personal experience and also any comparisons to similar shells like the leer 180 series that's also a mid rise height shell. Thanks in advance!

Also, one dealer quoted me $1950 for the are mx with windoors and Yakima rack bars including installation. Is this reasonable?

I like mine a lot. With a sleeping platform that sits around tailgate height, I still have enough headroom not to be claustrophobic at all. The windoors are way cheaper than Leer's and all in all it seems like a great product so far (only had it for about a month). The main gripe I have is that a lot of dust gets in when I drive down dirt roads... Need to find a fix for that at some point.

With vented windoors on both sides, a light, a sliding door to the cab and roof racks I paid $2500 out the door with installation. If youre getting it for $1950 otd, go for it! You won't regret it. If you want pictures of mine, look at the last page of this thread.

I got a question hopefully one of you topper/shell guys can help me out with.

I'm looking at getting a LEER 100XR. Never had a topper on a truck before. How easy is it to take these things on and off? I really want a shell for camping and trips to the mountain, but I also need an open bed occasionally during the summer for working on the lawn. Is it pretty reasonable to take it off and put it back on 1-2 times a season? Or should I get a softopper?

Plenty of great products so far !
image.jpg image.jpg I've got Leer's on both of my Tacos. 07 has Thule installed at Leer $2250 with side sliders, between window slider that's removable . No rack on the 16.

Are Windoors worth the money? Bouncing between getting a rebel or 100xr for my DCLB.. Headliner, fold down front window/slider, roof tracks, and pop-lock.

I think they are, but I have a hitch mounted bike rack which can make getting into the back of the truck a hassle sometimes, so the windoors are a great addition for me. Your needs may vary. I went with the ARE shell because their version of windoors were half as expensive as LEER and Snugtop. So far I'm happy with them and they seem pretty solid and of decent quality. I went with the lower end ARE shell. Only real difference with the higher-end ARE shells is the side windows/windoors are recessed, but I didn't like the look of the way ARE does it. My shell, with the options I went with was $2,007.00 with installation.

I too agree. I would not be a happy camper if i had to climb in the back of the bed and arrange things in a way that everything i needed was at the tailgate end of the bed.

Wondering what kind of mpg you're getting with your setup, with and without the RTT? I went one size up on the KO2's and also have a V-series and my MPG went way down once I added the shell. Took a little hit with the KO2's, but suffered even more once I added the camper shell, and I don't have any racks or anything on top of my cab or shell.

I just took mine off to install roof rack rails in the garage. Super easy, but it will be to heavy for the gf or wife. I asked my neighbour and no problems, prolly weighs around 180 so get a guy inside to lift with his shoulders and another guy outside at the tailgate.
Looks great with or without it too.

Sharp looking truck , did you put a leveling kit on it? Any rubbing on any part of the truck?
    Thanks!

I purchased a Leer 100XR from Canopy World in Lynnwood, WA on 7/2. It arrived last Friday (7/15) and I just got it installed today! One of the main features we bought it for was the ability to lock and unlock the hatch from the inside. So that when we go camping or for any reason have to sleep in the bed, we can do so without people/animals being able to open it on us, and still get out for midnight bathroom runs... However, as I was loading it up for our upcoming weekend, I noticed the latch wasn't the one promised... I will be calling them tomorrow to get that exchanged for the right one. Luckily, I not only work next door to the dealer, but we work with the dealer and send our customers to them as well, so it should be ready by the time I'm off work tomorrow (granted they have the correct latch system in stock)! I definitely recommend them to anyone looking to purchase a topper/shell/tonneau. It is a family-run business and the owners are there open-close. Great people! I will post pics tomorrow when the sun is out...

Selling your topper? What happened? Just decide to go a different route?

Got me new topper yesterday and I am loving it! I went with ARE mainly to get the trim around the bottom of the topper. Options are carpet headliner, dog screens and roof rack. Will use it for the first time tomorrow when I take my babies to the lake with me.....
