Because it would be bad for mpg's on a stock vehicle. Besides, there's no gears for the 3rd gen yet anyways.

Yea, just got rid of my new 2.7 for Taco and couldn't be happier. Yes, the ford will easily win off the line. But if you want speed, get car. If you want to drive a school bus, buy ford or Chevy. Love the GMC crap. For every one of these guys, there are 5 more here on this site who say opposite. I drove one, wasn't impressed, felt 1990's on inside.

I drive a lot between Phoenix, AZ and Flagstaff, AZ - elevation change 6000 ft - 2 hours of up and down through mountains and valleys. I have a 2016 with about 11K miles on it and a bed rack, rtt, extra fuel, etc. in the truck at all times. The power to get me up to flag is sufficient, but barely. I hate the fact that the cruise control has to be at 4k+ rpm and 4th gear just to maintain 82mph. It gets annoying. I am really hoping for a forced induction system to come out soon. I know that will be one of the things I'll be hunting for at the next SEMA.

Another thing it's that the truck usually doesn't like cruising above 70. When I try to cruise at 80 it constantly jumps to 4th. At 70mph I can usually stay in 5th and sometimes 6th. I can get get close to the 23mpg epa highway when I do this, and I'm not stock.

but when the speed limit is 75mph most of the way up... It just feels silly that a new truck would not be able to do this easily.

Yep more torque all the way around...I imagine that Toyota only designed it for the wheel set that comes stock on them??

Once you change the equation of tire size and add some weight and a lift the truck (any vehicle not just the T3) and it won't perform as it did with stock gearing and will feel grossly underwhelming.

guess 70mph is it maximum velocity in 6th gear, less if head wind.

It's not that it can't do it easily. It's a smaller displacement engine and you have to remember that the smaller engine makes more power up top, not down low. If your truck had to switch to 4th at 85mph that doesn't not mean it's out of power. Floor it in 4th at 85 and you'll still accelerate. All new gears do is change the gearing. Go figure. So it's not technically adding "power" it's just putting the power back where you want it.

That's the problem though. it doesn't much at all. Going up an incline at 82mph on CC in the right lane, you need to get into the left lane to pass someone but don't want to hold up the traffic going 90mph in left lane, I slam the gas pedal and not much happens. It can't downshift anymore because it's close to the red line in 4th. That tells me that the engine needs more power.

This is me venting. I love the truck, just wish it had about 100hp/tq more. Then it would be perfect. It's the reason why I am not even considering going with larger than stock tires before I put on a forced induction system or regear.

i would love to re gear. i have 2wd so not only lowering the gear ratio but would replace with a good old fashion posi traction so i could have true 2 wd above 5mph.
i came from a 2008 2nd gen and really notice the difference.

That odd. I have bigger heavier tires and mine accelerates fine here at 6000 ft in the city. Also goes over the big pass alright. Although my 3rd gear pulls until high 90's...no way yours shouldn't downshift at 80. Don't hold your breathe for FI. I doubt it will ever happen. If you're stock and unhappy maybe you're just in the wrong mindset. I prepared for something slow after my evo IX, so maybe that why I'm content with it.

Yeah, I knew that it was slow to begin with but needed the reliability for an expedition build. I came from a hemi Grand Cherokee that had ton of power but was not reliable. What makes you say FI will not come anytime soon? I know TRD will not make an SC for it, but other companies picking up the slack? URD?

If URD can get Toyota's ecu codes I will be hugely surprised. I would love a s/c for the truck, just don't see it happening.

3rd gear is easily 80s range, 2nd tops out a little north of 60 and 3rd will pull for a long time before you hit 4th that'll take it to the limiter. And it's got sufficient power to hit speeds much higher than you'll ever need in a truck, just not sufficient in the range where it needs to be to maintain highway speeds in overdrive. That's the key and where Toyota dropped the ball IMO.

Ask me how I know

Never had a single ticket either, even in a bright red Mustang with a built in cop magnet nor my Tundra. In the Mustang it's easy to speed but I find that I'm more aware of that so I monitor it closely. In the Taco it takes a while to really move but when you're passing someone out of frustration who can't maintain their speed and has been drifting all over the road sometimes things get out of hand. Literally the middle of nowhere too.

I've seen worse though. And I wish I could get a SC or Turbo on this thing. Can you imagine a small twin turbo setup like the EB in a Tacoma? 400+ ft/lb would be great for merging on the highway or plowing though stuff in 4wd. Not much use beyond that though, but I can imagine it would help the poor little engine out and stay in overdrive going down the highway. Add power, get better milage?

Haha! Nice! I will be running up there tomorrow for the weekend and have the kayak, mountain bikes and gear to take up for the summer. I will see how fast 3rd gear get's me. Might have to manually shift to it.

I agree. I don't understand why the truck couldn't have a more aggressive 5th gear and use 6th gear as the low rpm overdrive gear.

it has power but it has to SCREAM to get it. I like more torque down low, like a truck should be.
I LOVE my truck but I give it a "C" in the power dept.

My old gti delivered over 200 ft/lbs at 2000ish rpms. I wonder what the taco gives you that low on a dyno....
